Flags Still Flying - 300 Years of Signal Flags at Sea
A presentation by David Craddock, author of What Ship, Where Bound?
David Craddock began his working life at sea as a cadet with P&O. His first book WHAT SHIP, WHERE BOUND? draws on his sea-going experience and later career in graphic design to tell the story of visual communication at sea. Not surprisingly, flag signalling – the only medium devised by and expressly for seafarers – occupies more than half the book.
The talk on 3rd September will explore how we got our Mercantile and Naval Signal Codes and, building on wide research for the book from some well-known paintings to archive sources, will show how the codes have been used in peace and war.
