The Murder of Mary Ashford
27th May 1817
In the small hours of 27 May 1817, Mary Ashford, a young servant girl from Edington near Birmingham, left a party with Abraham Thornton. A few hours later she was found drowned in a pool. An inquest established she had been raped prior to her murder. The trial that took place for her murder would change English legal history.
