Along with the Tiger, Sherman and T-34, the Panther ranks as one of the most famous tanks of the Second World War. Anthony Tucker-Jones, in this comprehensive new study of a remarkable fighting vehicle, uses over 100 archive photographs, along with a selection of colour profiles, to describe its design, development and operational record.
On the Eastern Front the German army needed to counter the Red Army’s robust and utilitarian T-34 which began to appear in every-growing and eventually decisive numbers. The Panther, the German response, was rapidly conceived and produced under extraordinarily difficult wartime conditions. With its sloping armour and a high-velocity 75mm gun, it proved to be a better medium tank than its predecessor the Mk IV, it was more versatile than the heavyweight Tiger and it was superior to most of the Allied tanks it faced. It also had an important influence on subsequent tank design.
Anthony Tucker-Jones’ photographic history gives a fascinating insight into its wartime career.
Collectors of Panther-related images and photographic material will not be disappointed with this book as it contains a multitude of crisp images that reveal both the strengths and weaknesses of the German medium-heavy tank. I found it especially useful in that the book covered different variants of the Panther gun tank such as the Jagdpanther and the Bergepanther. While these vehicles are indeed rarer, it would have been more pleasant had the author included more photographs of other Panther variants.

There is certainly no doubt that the Soviet T-34, the tank that the Panther was meant to counter, was one of the most successful tank designs during the Second World War, owing mostly due to its all-around combat efficacy, mechanical reliability and its exceptional ease of manufacture. Nevertheless, there is something truly alluring and attractive about the German Panther that the crude T-34 can never hope to imitate. I strongly recommend this book to all those who are ardent fans of the Mark V Panzer and to those who enjoy collecting WW2 images and photographic evidence.

Anthony Tucker-Jones has given another brilliant book in the Images of War Series with The Panther Tank: Hitler’s T-34 Killer. The information provided in this book is on point and accurate and shed light on the Panther tanks of the Second World War and the delicate balance of warfare and part it played, especially again the Russian T-34. From front to back there are over one hundred period photographs, many from private collection including the author’s own. This Special Edition if Images of War would make a fine addition to anyone’s personal library.

Tucker-Jones has produced a brilliant text on the Mark V Panther Tank. This latest material at 120 pages is a superb look at the technical details of the machine and the story of its development from the mid to late Second World War period.

The highlight has to be in the scope of the photo evidence supplied which is extremely crisp, detailed and cover the early models through the design process and field development. Added are some excellent illustrations of the Panther from David Lee Hemingway, which bring a full range of camo and paint examples to the color photos. These are stellar examples for those who re-create these machines as hobbyists as well as for the general historian.
Tucker-Jones maintains a good flow in his narrative which covers the Panther, its variants as well as the assault gun version. The accompanying photos really assist the reader through the text as the clarity really allows for a full detailed study. The material is primarily focused on the Western Front and leaves open the possibility of an Eastern Front companion. This book is a good solid read and provides some good additional sources for those so inclined. The Panther Tank is a great addition to the Images of War series and a book I would recommend the both to the general history enthusiast or the serious military historian, it serves both segments quite well.
I love the large amount of images included in the book which will provide many inspiring ideas for my own Panther tank modelling. It really is stacked full of black and white images of Panthers in various situations, many wrecked or shot full of holes! So anyone with an interest in this distinctive vehicle should grab a copy.

What a great culmination once again of information and great photographs from this author. Fighting on the Eastern Front and the war is going badly for Germany. The Russian T-34 tank is running rampant through Hitler's Army and he needs an answer quickly. The result was the Panther Tank. One of the most recognizable pieces of armor of WWII. As great as this tank became, it did not start out without its issues. The author takes us from the drawing board to the many variants conceived from the exceptional design of the Panther tank. As always with the Images of War series, the photographs are some of the best I have ever seen. A first class read all the way!
