The First Battle of the Marne was one of the most pivotal battles in history. Fought outside Paris in September 1914, it turned the tide of the German invasion of France, and robbed Kaiser Wilhelm II of his best chance of winning the First World War.

The battle began when the French and British armies launched a massive counter-offensive, and it ended – after five, tense days of fluctuating fortunes – in a German retreat. The so-called 'miracle of the Marne' was among the most crucial episodes of the war, and yet no complete, in-depth guide to the battlefield has been available until now in English.

Andrew Uffindell begins his guidebook with a gripping account of the battle, followed by a series of easy-to-follow tours of the battlefield. Each tour covers a particular sector in detail, using vivid eyewitness accounts to reveal what the fighting was like for the men in the front line.

A useful account of perhaps the most significant and pivotal conflict of 1914, ending the German hopes of a rapid victory in the west and heralding the four years of trench warfare that followed.

Miniature Wargames

The battle of the Marne is regarded as one of the most pivotal battles in history, but yet until now not much has been written explaining where the various battles that made up this important part of the campaign took place. In this book Andrew Uffindell begins with an excellent and gripping account of the battle which is well worth the read its self, but this is followed up with a series of guides or tours of the battlefield and surrounding areas. Starting with the ‘Opening clash ‘ there are seven very indepth tours to follow ending with ‘The fight for Mondement’ I thoroughly enjoyed reading about this major part of the First World War which I must admit I knew very little about. Andrew Uffindell has done terrific work here not only telling the story of the battle, but in giving an excellent ‘Feel’ for the whole region in which the battle took place. I think if I visit Paris in the future I will be taking a copy of this book with me as I am now very interested in seeing the places mentioned for myself. Highly recommended reading .

The Battle of the Marne was the first decisive battle of the Great War and although British troops were involved, there have been few published works in English. This new guide by respected military historian Andrew Uffindel fills a massive gap in our knowledge of this battle and the battlefield today. It is well written and the illustrations are a mix of contemporary images along with those of the ground as it is today. There is a colour section, and the maps are detailed and clear.
This is a fascinating book and an important contribution to our understanding of the Great War battlefields as it gives a clear lead to those who want to explore beyond Flanders and the Somme and do not know how. Highly recommended.
