This books takes forward in great detail, and necessity, the German angle on the defence of what was one of the most pivotal defensive positions during the Battle of the Somme. All of the various villages names front on the Somme resonate, but perhaps none more so than Thiepval. This German defensive position became an iconic symbol of the British attempts to capture the German lines during the Battle.

As we would expect from all of the Battleground Europe series, the book gives so much to both the battlefield visitor, or arm chair enthusiast. It does not fail to deliver.

One in the handy Battleground Europe series of books which provide historical accounts alongside travel guide information which enables the reader to enrich their visits to this area of the Western Front. Visitors still flock to this area where in 1916 a bitter three month struggle took place. This book explains how, from 1914 onwards, the German defenders turned this key feature into a virtual fortress. Well written & researched guide. 9/10. MM
