All too often Romanisation seems to mean villas and mosaics, the creation of a Romanised elite. This interesting study uses the archaeology of central Italy to examine the impact of Romanisation in late 3rd and 2nd century BC on the lives of ordinary Italians. The book focuses on an analysis of black-gloss wares which emerged in large numbers at this time. As such they show both a broader cultural homogenisation and smaller localised variations. Roman Roth argues that this shows that non-elite populations were responding creatively to Romanisation and engaging with cultural change in a manner that has been thought to apply only to social elites.
