This book was a lot of fun to read. I learned things about space that I never knew before, and would have probably never thought to ask.

Space has long been a topic I have enjoyed. I like space in general, but missions to explore around Earth and the moon are specifically interesting to me. Since I won't be able to do anything like that personally, seeing the experiences and pictures from others that have done it are great to see. This book details the missions to explore the moon, including what led up to them and how preparations were made.
All aspects of the flights, from the initial space launches to the rockets and modules, to the people involved are included. Each section is very thorough and includes pictures that help explain the information and let readers see what the people and equipment were like. Anybody with an interest in space would find this book informative and engaging.

My husband is hard to shop for and finding a unique gift that he will love is even harder. I saw this book and wondered if it might be right for him…and it is! He’s an astronomy nerd and this book is going to be a great way for him to enjoy this passion every day in 2023. I was going to wait to give it to him at Christmas, but I figured this would make a great anniversary gift for him and he can read up and be ready for 2023.
This makes a great gift for anyone who is interested in the subject. Don’t hesitate to buy if for them, you’ll have title of best gift giver for a while!

In the introduction to his book, author Colin Turbett stresses that it is not a technical manual, rather an attempt to describe the political and social background to the space race and the part it played in the fall of the Soviet Union. It fulfils this aim admirably.
Turbett examines Russian culture and society from the start of the postwar era, on to the space program itself with detailed biographies of the leading players such as Yuri Gagarin and Valentina Tereshkova, through to the agricultural plan and right up to the collapse of the Soviet Union. “Soviets in Space” is meticulously researched and is one of the best books I have read on the subject.
Many contemporary images and photographs of cosmonauts and space memorabilia enhance the text. Fact-filled yet readable, this is a timely, much-needed book that celebrates the Russian space programme, and the Russian people, without bias.
