"In summary, in this book Brian Lavery has exploited the best of contemporary publishing skill, especially in colour illustration, to provide a synthesis of the insights available in his earlier major works such as The Ship of the Line and The Arming and Fitting of English Ships of War, 1600-1815. Here his years as senior curator at NMM bear further fruit, and this authoritative account in affordable and handy format cannot be commended too highly."

Marvellous reference on this set of light cruisers, geared heavily towards the ship modeller, with plenty of inspiration to found in here which I am sure will tempt more to have a go at some of these. I continue to enjoy the ShipCraft series.

Les Brown, Small Warships
Following on from his Shipcraft 27, Sloops and Frigates, Les Brown has taken on another wide ranging set of ships, the Hunts, Towns, V&Ws and a number of the smaller group of old destroyers that were adapted for escort work. In just 18 pages he has managed to give a good overview of the design and construction of the ships. Later in the book he covers the subsequent modifications. The text is backed up by excellent and carefully selected photographs. The range of models and accessories available covers the old out of product ion versions, along with modern 21st century models kits, including 3D printed and card formats. As usual the real inspiration lies in the wonderful gallery of built models in various scales, the detailed line drawings, colour schemes and superb photographs. Many of the photographs have not been published before and they have been carefully chosen to illustrate the text. This is another terrific, inexpensive and handy book for anybody wishing to build models of these.. Read more

ShipCraft 12: Essex Class Carriers
The latest volume covers the hugely important American carrier of the Second World War. Built in larger numbers than any fleet carrier before or since, the Essex class can claim to be the US Navy's most significant weapon in the defeat of Japan. Carrying up to 100 aircraft and capable of absorbing enormous punishment (not one was sunk), they spearheaded… Read more...

Ship Dioramas
This book is about the art of displaying waterline models. By their very nature, ship models that do not show the full hull and are not mounted on an artificial stand cry out for a realistic setting. At its most basic this can be just a representation of the sea itself, but to give the model a context – even to tell some sort of story – is far… Read more...

Miniature Ship Models
This book is the first comprehensive history of how the 1:1200 scale and its 1:1250 continental equivalent became accepted as the modern standard for miniature ship models. The origins can be traced back to the first years of the twentieth century and their use as identification aids by the military during the First World War, but when peace came the… Read more...
