The latest edition of this annual publication maintains, many will say raises, the high standard set by the first edition in 2010. The format and the editor have remained the same throughout this period, but the inclusion of numerous contributors, either specialists in the navies of a region, or experts in a particular field of technology, have resulted in the book retaining a fresh, interesting and entertaining approach to the subjects.

This series provides a high-quality, low-cost source of information, enabling the reader to be kept informed of the developments of navies throughout the world. It is also a compact resource for comparing the effectiveness of the navies. Great value for money!

This Review has been published at a particularly appropriate time with the activities in defence of the Ukraine. Not only are we seeing the age of the combat drone, but also the fact that Russian naval and Ground forces are not as efficient as the West had been led to believe.

Not only has the Review looked at the aspects of the Russo-Ukrainian war, but it also looks at the key defence issues that have become so topical over the last few years. We have commentary on Asia and the Pacific and takes into account the plans to build new nuclear submarines for Australia. We then have articles on hypersonic missiles and developments within the Royal Navy. There is also in-depth article on American carriers.

My conclusion is that this is an up to date review at a critical period of change.

Conrad Waters is to be congratulated on this latest edition in this series of annual naval reviews that never fails to deliver a consistently high standard of authoritative articles from authors such as David Hobbs, Norman Friedman and Dr James Bosbotinis. For anyone interested in current naval issues who can only afford one book – this has to be the book.

Highly readable and informative I cannot recommend it highly enough.
