For over a decade this annual has provided an authoritative summary of all that has happened in the naval world in the previous twelve months, combining regional surveys with one-off major articles on noteworthy new ships and other important developments. Besides the latest warship projects, it also looks at wider issues of significance to navies, such as aviation and weaponry, and calls on expertise from around the globe to give a balanced picture of what is going on and to interpret its significance.
As 2022 saw the outbreak of the first major European war since 1945, it is not surprising that the naval aspects of the conflict in Ukraine take centre stage, with an interim assessment of the fighting so far and what can be gleaned of the strategies and tactics of the warring parties. Another newsworthy topic – hypersonic missiles – is the subject of Norman Friedman’s expert analysis.
Of the regular features, the ‘Significant Ships’ cover the US Navy’s Nimitz class carriers, now representing fifty years of evolution; and HMNZS Aotearoa, the largest warship built for New Zealand. Of the Fleet Reviews, one looks at the US Navy’s adaptation to the return of Great Power competition, not least with China, and the second covers the Vietnam People’s Navy, which faces Chinese pressure at close quarters.
Firmly established as the only annual naval overview of its type, World Naval Review is essential reading for anyone – whether enthusiast or professional – interested in contemporary maritime affairs.

BOOK OF THE MONTH!
Ships Monthly - July 2023
For anyone with an interest in contemporary naval affairs whether an enthusiast or a defence professional, this annual has become required reading.
Yet again beautifully laid out with many data tables and summary boxes, and superbly illustrated throughout with many photographs and John Jordan’s excellent drawings. It is most strongly recommended.

International Plastic Modellers Society, Newsletter of the Small Warship Special Interest Group – Issue 140, March 2023
The latest edition of this annual publication maintains, many will say raises, the high standard set by the first edition in 2010. The format and the editor have remained the same throughout this period, but the inclusion of numerous contributors, either specialists in the navies of a region, or experts in a particular field of technology, have resulted in the book retaining a fresh, interesting and entertaining approach to the subjects.
Les Brown, Small Warships
This series provides a high-quality, low-cost source of information, enabling the reader to be kept informed of the developments of navies throughout the world. It is also a compact resource for comparing the effectiveness of the navies. Great value for money!
This Review has been published at a particularly appropriate time with the activities in defence of the Ukraine. Not only are we seeing the age of the combat drone, but also the fact that Russian naval and Ground forces are not as efficient as the West had been led to believe.
York Model Engineers Newsletter
Not only has the Review looked at the aspects of the Russo-Ukrainian war, but it also looks at the key defence issues that have become so topical over the last few years. We have commentary on Asia and the Pacific and takes into account the plans to build new nuclear submarines for Australia. We then have articles on hypersonic missiles and developments within the Royal Navy. There is also in-depth article on American carriers.
My conclusion is that this is an up to date review at a critical period of change.
Conrad Waters is to be congratulated on this latest edition in this series of annual naval reviews that never fails to deliver a consistently high standard of authoritative articles from authors such as David Hobbs, Norman Friedman and Dr James Bosbotinis. For anyone interested in current naval issues who can only afford one book – this has to be the book.
Peter Wykeham-Martin - Warship World
Highly readable and informative I cannot recommend it highly enough.
