The village sits on top of the ridge that bears its name, a ridge that was an objective on the 1st July 1916. As it was, the whole position was not finally cleared until early September 1916 as German, Australian and British troops fought tenaciously over it.

This excellent book by Graham Keech in the Battleground series provides crucial insight to an important yet another aspect of the Battle of Somme. Similar to other parts of the Somme Battle, Pozieres is often overlooked as a result of the focus that is understandably placed on the 1st of July. The Battle, however, continued until November and Pozieres was a pivotal aspect of it.

The reader is given an overview of the opening phase of the Somme, July 1916. It goes on to develop very useful and insightful detail on the Australians on the Somme, actions adjacent to the them, as well as background on seven Victoria crosses. Similar to other great books in this series, it builds up background on the Cemeteries and Memorials, alongside providing some helpful Battlefield tours which you can pursue yourself upon visiting the battlefields. This book gives comprehensive detail of the events on the ground with complimentary maps which enable you to follow events. Maps are interspersed throughout the text, thus giving you a constant reference point and update on the description of the particular aspect of the battle.
