Spectacular nebulae where stars are born, beautiful star clusters from the early formation of the Milky Way, and galaxies as far as a billion light years away, all feature in this book of stunning images from astro photographer Chris Baker.

The author takes the reader on a journey through time and space to the Deep Sky, far beyond our Solar System. It is a pictorial description of the awe-inspiring wondrous objects that exist “out there”.

The images are of objects from hundreds to many millions of light years away; distances of such enormity are hard for our minds to grasp. The book presents fascinating information on what the Earth was like when the light started its earth-bound journey through space.

For example, as the light left the Andromeda Galaxy 2.5 million years ago on its interstellar journey to Chris’s telescope, the Himalayas are still being raised.

Chapters are included describing the basics of astrophotography, as modern telescopes and cameras make this a rewarding hobby well within reach of the amateur astronomer. Chris describes his observatory in the mountains of Spain along with practical guidance on how to get started in astrophotography.

With a concise, clear discussion on the background of astronomical science, this is above all, a book to celebrate the beauty and fascination of space.

This book is well-written and easy to read. The writer is very familiar with his subject and technical matters are well and clearly explained...

this volume is well set out, very readable and very informative. Although its target audience appears to be those who have an interest astronomy and astro-photography, it is also of the ‘Beautiful Picture Book’ genre and is a delight to view. In that respect it is arguably a work of art. As a volume of ‘Beautiful pictures; it may have broad appeal to those who non-astronomically-inclined are simply looking for such things. Because of its in-depth coverage of its subject, this volume should also appeal to ‘Night-Sky-enthusiasts’ of all levels of interest, to the extent that it may become a standard reference work on astro photography.

Being aware of Chris Baker's astroimages, we were excited to get our hands on his book to feast our eyes on more of his exquisite work. We were not disappointed - there are a multitude of pictures showing nebulae, galaxies and other celestial wonders, revealing the many exuberant colours and fine details that can only be imaged with a great-quality telescope.

The pages of Photographing the Deep Sky offers excellent advice on how to image all kinds of targets and is packed with information on telescopes, filters and tips and tricks on imaging far-flung objects. Details on these seep-sky targets in more of a scientific sense are also included, where Baker briefly explains the nitty-gritty theory behind the objects. Although the pictures are glorious, and the fine glossy paper really emphasises them, we believe there could have been more text to describe the accompanying images in much more enticing detail. This is the only criticism of this book, since the main appeal are its images, not really dampening any enjoyment of the stunning astronomical sights printed on its pages.

All About Space, August 2018

It's impossible to not deeply admire Baker's book not only for it's mesmerising images, but for its creative yet sensible structure and its clear, concise explanations. It all contributes to this coffee table-style book giving Chris Baker's jaw-dropping astrophotography plenty of room to shine.

***** Literally Out of This World
Fabulous photos and really interesting script, interesting without being too technical. Not "nerdy" at all! I cannot fully appreciate the distances in space and find it very humbling. This is a book that I keep going back to and my favourite picture changes every week!

***** A true collector's item!
A stunning collection of photographs of the Galaxy accompanied by a mine of information of just what lies within our space system. Chris has captured awesome images and displayed them in a high gloss hard backed book that is a true collector's item.

***** Much more than just a 'coffee table book'.
Chris Baker is well known in the field of astronomy and astro-photography. He has published several articles and images in 'The Sky at Night' and 'Astronomy Now' magazines.
The wonderful images in this book were taken by the author's remotely operated telescope in the mountains above Granada in Spain. The clear mountain air and the absence of 'light pollution' allow for the long exposures necessary to capture light from distant parts of our own galaxy, and later in the book, other galaxies upto 1 billion light years beyond.
While these carefully printed photos are beautiful in their own right, this is more than a 'pretty picture' book. The text is well-founded in science and Chris Baker takes great care to convey to the reader the vastness of the universe and the relation between distance and time. A helpful chapter by Tony Halker demonstrates how the Earth has changed since the light captured by Chris's telescope first left the objects photographed.
This is an impressive and inspiring book which carefully explains how these images were assembled from numerous long exposures through polarising filters.

***** An informative, accessible and impressive book of images of the stars.
I just loved the images in this book. I bought it as a present but thought I must read it first as the images are so good. I am now reluctant to pass it on as it's so informative too. The best and most informative book on the stars I've read with pleasure.

***** Simply stunning!
I bought two of these books as presents and couldn't resist the temptation to read one before giving it to its intended recipient. If you are accustomed to books with a colour plate every few pages, 'Photographing the Deep Sky' will come as a very pleasant surprise. Every page-turn reveals a stunning photograph with just enough explanatory text to educate but never distract. More detailed text, about photography, relevant geology, etc, is sensibly located elsewhere in the book. That information is interesting to delve into. The format of the hardback version means that the photos are exactly the right size to enable you to appreciate their exquisite detail while also keeping the book to manageable dimensions. The enduring impression of this book is page after page of engrossing works of art; as you turn the pages they just keep coming! That they are actually real photographs adds to one's feeling of wonder. Reading about the author, you also get a feeling for his generosity of spirit. Highly recommend.

About Chris Baker

Since 2003 the author has been photographing the Deep Sky, initially from his home in the UK but since 2012 from his observatory atop a mountain in Spain. Here the air is clear, the surroundings dark and the skies mostly clear. This enables Chris to photograph deep into space, capturing the beauty of such things as star forming regions and distant galaxies. Chris has established a reputation as a leading astro photographer receiving awards, with his photographs and articles being published in numerous magazines. In 2015 Chris made his images available as limited edition wall art, known as ‘Galaxy on Glass’. This successful art business has attracted customers from all over the World, allowing others to enjoy these sensational images in their own homes and offices.
