The immediate impression was of the excellent quality of Oliver's narrative which accompanies each image. In my experience this quality is exceptional and achieves a real sense of engagement with the reader viewing the images.

It carries the reader forward with enthusiasm while at the same time imparting vital knowledge regarding the location, time of day, season, weather and specific technical details relating to the execution of the painting.

Oliver delivers his knowledge clearly, holding back nothing, thus giving the reader the best possible means of gaining the skills required to paint and with perseverance, which he specifically emphasises, to paint well.

Oliver has written a book that deserves a place on any artist's bookshelf as much for its valuable technical instruction as for the pleasure of its lovely illustrations and excellent narrative.
