Monty is a very funny character. That I already knew. But it was nice to see him laughing at himself in this book. At times I was laughing out loud. The Mastermind chapter is just hilarious. Monty is also a top cricketer. It’s a shame he didn’t stay at the top for longer. As a Sussex CCC fan his decline at the club was sad to witness.
If you read this, Monty, I hope you are in a better place now and are enjoying your cricket. I’ll never forget your exploits at Cardiff. Balls of steel.

Early on in The Full Monty Panesar expresses the hope that his book will have an uplifting effect on his reader. There are certainly some dark corners opened up and explored, but Panesar’s is a fascinating story. It is written in a slightly frenetic style but, and this is always what any writer aims for, the book is difficult to put down. It also helps that while Panesar does throw the odd brickbat, he always gives credit where it is due, and doesn’t simply use The Full Monty as a forum for settling old scores. It is also important that the book ends on an upbeat note, and Panesar certainly achieves his aim. As I closed the book, the smile was certainly still on my face, although nothing like as broadly as it will be if one day the name of Monty Panesar appears on a county team sheet again.

Monty's autobiography doesn't skirt around the difficult themes, but in the main it is an uncommonly cheerful book, full of jokes and jeux d'esprit.

Monty Panesar is one England’s finest spin bowlers and the first ever Sikh to play for his country. He has taken over 700 first-class wickets during his career, which included spells with Northants, Sussex and Essex. He was born in Luton, Bedfordshire, where he lives with his dog, Rambo.
