The Ml Abrams has proved itself to be the finest main battle tank in the World since its introduction into US Army service in 1981. It combines the ultimate balance between firepower, mobility and protection as demonstrated by its superior performance during the two Gulf Wars and in Afghanistan. It routed the Soviet equipment of Saddam Hussein's army and today remains the yardstick by which friends' and foes' MBTs are judged.
Its versatility and continual modernisation of weaponry armour and engineering guarantees that the MI Abrams will remain the US Army's spearpoint for years to come.
Expert author Michael Green has produced a comprehensive collection of images and highly informed text.

I was very impressed with this book. For a layman like myself, this is an eye-opener showing just how complicated tank warfare has become in a little under 100 years. The book is well-written without any of the flag-waving jingoism one normally finds with our cousins across the water.
Army Rumour Service (ARRSE)
As a model-maker's resource, I think it would be invaluable to anyone building any of the versions of the M1 Abrams. I would certainly recommend it to them. It is also very interesting from a military historian's point of view, depicting as it does, the development of one of the finest tanks in the world. Finally, as one curious in military vehicles, it does much to explain a lot of the myths attached to modern tanks. One hopes the author deals with the Challenger family in the same way.

The 184 pages are crammed with excellent, large, colour photographs, and some diagrams. Perhaps the excellent photographs are the main justification for the book.

Spectacular. One of the best documentation on tanks that has passed through my hands. Essential in the library of the tank modeler.

This is an important addition to a very popular series of books that feature lavish illustration with rare photographs. This is one of the larger books in the series and also contains a higher percentage of text, but without in any way reducing the unique collection of images that each book in the series is famed for. A delight with fine full colour photographs and clear drawings – Highly Recommended.

A good primer for the Abrams, the photos are well chosen and whilst some of the earlier images have been seen in previous publications, many of the more recent ones have not.

What I really like is the way the book progresses through design and development into the tank’s operational history, all presented in an easy on the eye style backed up by carefully selected images. While other books in this range might be considered a tad random on occasion, this one sticks to a tightly prepared script.
War History Online - Mark Barnes
Mr Green’s text describes the history and service of the Abrams in a readable and accessible style. The book is neither anoracky at one end of the scale or too generic at the other. I think I commented that one of his last books on tanks may have been out of place in the Images of War range and could have been an expanded and glossier history in it’s own right. I may have missed the point. Having a book of this quality in this range makes it affordable on one level and it adds a strong degree of credibility to the series on the other.
If you are interested in modern armour this book is a ‘must have’ for you. What it does is show how to put together an ambitious book to fit a specific format and make it all look so easy. Trust me – it isn’t as easy as it sometimes looks.

This is an excellent book that takes us on a journey. We start with the US Army having a poor collection of Main Battle Tanks in the 1950s and 60s, and we move through the initial production models M1 and M1A1, and then through to the highly successful M1A2. Green takes us along this journey in an interesting and authoritative style. Like all of the 'Images of War' series, this book is full of photographs. These certainly compliment the text and make this book a must for anyone interested in the Abrams Tank. Another winner from Pen and Sword and many thanks to them for the review copy.
The volume is a good source of information and a great reference for tank enthusiasts and scale modelers.

The Armor Journal - Alex Zaretser
An expert military subjects author, with over 100 non-fiction books written and revisiting a subject he's covered before, Michael Green's latest volume covering the American M1 Abrams Main Battle Tank is all at once easy-to-read, informative and generously supplied with photographs not easily found in other sources. This volume covers the M1 Abrams Tank's development and service through 2015. A boon for enthusiasts, gamers and modelers is color photography throughout. Line drawings are clear and complimentary where included. The accompanying text is well-researched, and the author makes great strides to consult noted researchers, manufacturer representatives and military personnel who operate the vehicle - a challenging task covering a system like this in constant use and upgrade. It is a volume well worth having if you are interested in the M1 Abrams Tank.
GunTruck Studios - Jim Lewis
Since entering services with the United States army in 1980, the M1 Abrams tank is arguably the finest main battle tank in the world, combining the optimum balance of firepower, mobility and protection. The combat effectiveness of the M1 Abrams was demonstrated during Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom. The latest version of tank is the yardstick by which competitors are measured and this is likely to remain so for some years. The author traces the factors that brought the M1 Abrams tank series from the drawing board to the front line. His detailed text highlights the design features that have made the tank such a dominant force from background history of the M1 through to M1A1, then M1A2 Abrams tanks, those employed by the Marine Corps and finally covers specialised vehicles and accessory kits. Profusely illustrated with colour photos throughout, this is an excellent, specialised book.

More content than anticipated. Recommended for Dino and Jedi tankers, alike...

I know nothing about tanks but this easy read with lots of illustrations has helped me to understand some of the reasons for tanks being like they are. Interesting and informative.

Excellent book. M1 Abrams Tank has maybe the best summary of the development history of the M1 up to 2015. A must get for any tank enthusiast. A nice selection of photos as well.

Plenty of photos throughout the book to illustrate the changing shapes of the Abrams over its' years of service, including combat in the hot climate of the Middle East. Photos do include the interior of the tanks so lots of detail in here for modellers. Among the specialized variants have been the tanks fitted with full width mine plows, with dozer blades, and special purpose vehicles such as the Assault Breacher Vehicle, which was cancelled on grounds of cost, plus a small number of bridgelayers.
