The rise and fall of the Third Reich has been a source of revulsion and fascination since the close of the Second World War. The images of the concentration camps; Hitler's hypnotic oration; and the vast Nuremberg rallies are seared into the collective consciousness. However, it is important that we understand the complex circumstances which allowed this particular branch of fascism to flourish. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
Plenty of diagrams from that survey are included. While a few of those old bunkers have been demolished since the war, many have not, and there are some great photos of many of them today, both inside and out. Once again, and especially with the extra detail that has been added since that original article, this is another of the modern series of Then & Now books from After the Battle which I think will be very popular, and which will also be handy to have with you if you plan to visit the area yourself.

“…the book starts with WWI spying and sabotage in the US by German agents. After that comes the great 1930s spy rings and the 1940s spy and sabotage efforts. Enjoyed it!"

“…this book is about 1930s-1940s German public opinion and the people and groups opposing Hitler and the Nazis. As the Nazi political system was a police state, most objectors ended up in concentration camps or executed...Enjoyed it.”

"It is one of the very few accounts to have been written by one of ‘the many’ without whom ‘The Few’ could not have succeeded. The author joined up in late 1941 and was trained as an armourer, initially serving at a gunnery school. However, shortly before D-Day he joined a ‘Free French’ Spitfire squadron with which he served until the end of the war. The second half of this highly readable account is in effect a detailed history of the Free French Spitfire Wing during the last year of the war. That in itself is hugely welcome, but even more so is the description of the itinerant life of a 2nd Tactical Air Force fighter unit in the months after D-Day and the often-miserable conditions endured by the hardworking and ever faithful groundcrew. No less valuable is the earlier description of life for a working-class family in London during the inter-war years. A peach of a book that was unputdownable."

Their Cemetery Sown With Corn
In this 'factional' novel, lost for more than 70 years, hero John Arnold is a post graduate student at Bonn University in the early 1930s. He is caught up in the insidious rise of the Nazis in the village where he lodges. His position is complicated by his love of Germany itself, as well as by his increasing fondness for two women; Tilde, the maid… Read more...
