Ashley Jackson, has had an extremely distinctive and illustrious life in the world of art. Since opening his first gallery back in 1963, he has become one of the country's leading and most successful landscape watercolourists. His unique evocative and distinctive paintings of brooding moorlands have become synonymous with Yorkshire, and more particular the moors above and around his Gallery situated in the heart of the Pennines, Holmfirth. His works have been exhibited worldwide, and adorn the walls of many successful and famous people, from politicians to actors, from Tsars to Princes. Ashley was honoured when the former President of America Bill Clinton, an avid art collector, was presented with an original watercolour. Ashley throughout his career has always been an ambassador for the arts. He has strived through his life to encourage people not just to take up art, but to appreciate the beauty of the landscape around us. His exhibitions have included "Ashley Jackson One Man Exhibition" at Patchings Artfarm, Calverton Notts in 2003 and "Ashley Jackson’s Yorkshire Moors - a love affair" - Victoria Quarter, Leeds in 2002. He has also held exhibitions in New York, Chicago and Milan. His awards include the 2006 Life Time Achievement Award from Yorkshire Awards, the 2007 Life Time Achievement Award from the Huddersfield Examiner. He is the present day Ambassador for Northernart. The local artist has done extensive charity work in the past and is part of the Prince's Trust.

Watercolourist, Ashley Jackson, is well known for studies of his native North Country moorlands and hills, and his large-scale paintings capture something of their brooding atmosphere. In Ashley Jackson: An Artist's Life author Chris Bond, a feature writer for the Yorkshire Post, tells us about Ashely's life and career, from his early struggles to the opening of his first art gallery in 1963. It was then that his paintings of moorland scenes began to attract more widespread interest, and he became known as the 'Yorkshire Artist'.

Ashley uses a limited range of colours, indeed, some of his moorland paintings appear to be almost monochromes, but they effectively capture the sombre atmosphere of his subjects. He paints in the traditional English style, using no white or black and allows the white of the paper to shine through for his light passages. In his early days he outlined his subject matter with a felt-tip pen and painted over the top, but, with growing confidence, left that technique behind, relying on his applied liquid washes to capture his desired effects. Here he differs from tradition and often applied up to 30 washes, depending on his knowledge of the behaviour of colours to avoid opaque results. I would have preferred to see more of his paintings, perhaps at the expense of some of the family photographs, but the title makes it clear that the subject is the artist's life, not just his paintings.

Leisure Painter, Oct 2010

"If you are looking for a glossy coffee-table book to impress guests with, you could do worse than this beautifully illustrated biography of Yorkshire artist Ashley Jackson.
But this is much more than just an impressive looking tome. An Artists Life is a compelling book looking back on the life and work of the self-styled 'Yorkshire Artist' now in his 70th Year, whose watercolor paintings have become synonymous with country landscapes."

All My Friends Will Buy It A Bottlefield Tour (Hardback)

This is a long awaited memoir from leading military publisher Leo Cooper. Yorkshire born. he was educated at Radley and by National Service in Kenya, before returning to London to join the publishing firm Longmans. He later worked for Andre Deutsch and Hamish Hamilton, who both decided that he was unemployable, a decision with which he thoroughly concurred. They both sacked him. There was only one thing to do and that was 'if you can't join them, beat them' and this was what Leo did. This book is a vivid account of the efforts made to keep a small publishing company going whilst being permanently…
