The Battle of the Little Big Horn: a new appraisal
The Aftermath of the Battle of the Little Big Horn
History is not a determinable constant. There are no rules and new evidence is always there waiting to be found to put past events into new perspectives, especially where myths and legends have been manipulated to deliberately create a lie.
George A Custer’s death at the Battle of the Little Big Horn in 1876 was such a manipulated distortion of the truth and for nearly 150 years this account was held by many to represent what happened that fateful June day and its subsequent consequences.
These two books were born over 35 years ago when my father gave me a book on the American Indian Wars. Having been lured into the golden era of the American Wild West, I wanted to know more. Having read of Custer’s notorious exploits during the Civil War, which resulted in his promotion to General of Volunteers, his death at the Little Big Horn did not make sense.
My father had generated my insatiable hunger for history but it was my English tutor, William Emms, who taught me how to write it. Author, playwright and tv scriptwriter, I had no better tutor than William Emms to guide my path. His lectures changed my life and my writing.
As I researched deeper and deeper into my research for these books, I understood the trials and tribulations that Elizabeth Custer had experienced in her efforts to exonerate her husband of any blame for the defeat. I also began to uncover the dark secrets that lay behind these events.
As the years rolled on and I continued my research, my husband and two daughters said it would be a miracle if my work was ever published. Even now they cringe at the mention of Custer and the battle. However, miracles do happen and the publishers Pen & Sword have led the way to changing history and printing the truth. I am so grateful to them.
For the first time, after over 35 years of diligent research, the truth is now available to everyone. The political policies, the murderous conspiracies and the deliberate cover-up, along with those responsible are all revealed. The books show how the facts were systematically distorted to make the public believe the lies. Lies which have been accepted to be the truth until now.
During my research for this history, I wrote three other books (all of which sold out and are now out of print), and numerous articles on various aspects of military history for different journals. None of these have given me as much pleasure as these two books have, seeing my hard work available for all to read. The books break new ground and correct the lies, myths and legends that condemned Custer to bear the blame. They put the record straight. This is how history should be perceived and preserved.
The eminent author and philosopher Aldous Huxley once said:
“ Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored.”
