70th Anniversary of Guy Gibson's Death

On this day in 1944, Wing Commander Guy Penrose Gibson led a mission to bomb the German town of Rheydt, an area near the German city of Monchengladbach. After some confusion with flares, and under threat from flak and night bombers, Gibson crashed at Steenbergen. The true cause of his death has never been confirmed.
Gibson is famous as the Wing Commander of 617 Squadron during the in the 'Dambuster' raids - the 1955 film was inspired by his memoir 'Enemy Coast Ahead'.
