A lively exploration into the determined Scottish women of the predominantly Victorian and Edwardian periods and their fight and determination to achieve votes for women in a male dominated society.

Learn about women of all classes who fought proudly together; what tragedies they were dealt and the friendships that developed. Discover some of their antics and judge for yourself if they were too militant.

Learn why women fought against the system through the years. They suffered immense hardship, but this was the beginning of courageous and strong Scottish women fighting for what they believed in.

Using accounts from individual families of Scottish suffragettes and suffragists and photographs from their own albums, this book is able to shed light on how women were perceived by their family members, men, and the nation.

Explore individual areas of Scotland’s landscape. Journey through the cities and towns and observe the secrets and shame of how women were often treated at home, in educational establishments, the workplace and by the law.

Women’s Suffrage in Scotland seeks to understand the rights and beliefs of the women of Scotland, and their role in the path to women’s enfranchisement.

The book is full of stories of brave women who sacrificed their lives, their freedom and their possessions for a noble cause. At some point the government passed a law called the "Cat & Mouse Act" to overwhelm the will of the more diehard suffragettes who went on hunger strike. They were force-fed if they went on hunger strike and if they were too weak they were released, when they recovered they were arrested again.
Not all the women in the book were feminists, some opposed the vote for women, but in some ways they were influential in their sphere. Women received the vote in 1918, after a war showed the world that they could very well replace men and know how to suffer even more than men. Scottish women were at the forefront of this struggle which spread all over the world but which is still not recognized in many places, this book introduces us to those strong women and their lives.

Old Barbed Wire Blog

The vast majority of books about women's suffrage concentrate on the well-known names, the Pankhursts, for example, and it is left to Pen and Sword's peerless library of titles on the subject to finally come up with a book concentrating solely on women's suffrage in Scotland.

Books Monthly

Rather than writing a history of women's suffrage from a Scottish perspective, Carole O'Connor has taken a refreshingly different approach. The author devotes a chapter to each of the major cities and regions of Scotland: she begins with a short history and description from a range of perspectives (work, education etc), then follows up with pen pictures of the key figures who played a part in women's suffrage...
You don’t need to have a keen interest in women's suffrage in order to benefit from this book - I suspect that many researchers with Scottish ancestry will find it useful.
