This is a useful and well-done memoir. I can recommend it unhesitatingly to anyone interested in this period of the Royal Navy.

I found this book to be both enjoyable and remarkable.
The title ‘In War & Peace’ leads one to expect and equal amount of stories about each of the subjects however a large percentage is devoted to the social life of a Royal Navy Officer during the early 1900s. We learn about the parties, sports and especially about shooting as a leisure pastime some of which would be unacceptable today.
There is no doubt that Admiral Schofield contributed, in his many diverse postings, considerably to the final outcome of two world wars though I feel he kept a lot of what he did ashore and afloat from us.
A most enjoyable read which I found hard to put down.

With a naval career that saw service throughout both World Wars, Admiral Schofield’s story is one that fully justifies publication. He recorded his recollections and these have now been edited by his daughter, with some added background notes.

This is a highly enjoyable read. Schofield ‘s career from coal fired ships to the major fleet actions in the Pacific, included the relaxed life of an officer in the peacetime Royal Navy between the wars. Her final words in her foreword sum him up succinctly – “in body and spirit Schofield was a sailor all his life”. Highly recommended.

These unique memoirs are a modest account of an outstanding naval career. They are very well written in an engaging style and provide a colourful picture of the Royal Navy in a tumultuous half century. The text is supported by a photo-plate section with an interesting selection of images.
