In May 1940, the German Army swept over Europe, unleashing a campaign of battles of annihilation on a hitherto unheralded scale. France was quickly overcome and Holland, along with Belgium, fell in a matter of days. At the head of this vast operation was the Führer with his Supreme Command, and on hand to document the highlights of their inimitable campaign was Heinrich Hoffmann, Hitler's close friend and official photographer.

This is an invaluable photographic record of the events of Spring 1940, originally published as Mit Hitler im Westen, which was regarded as Heinrich Hoffman's finest work. The striking images displayed within provide both an intimate view inside the
life of the Führer, and present a chilling glimpse into one of history's most vicious campaigns, and darkest hours. An important historic work, With Hitler in the West provides a fascinating insight into the events of 1940, that shook the world.

Hoffmann ended the war by serving 4 years in prison and died in 1957. His photographs, virtually everything relating to Hitler as a politician and commander, ended up seized by the US military. There is no doubt that he was one of the artistic personalities of Nazi propaganda and that with his work he contributed, like others such as the director Leni Riefenstahl to the affirmation of the Nazi doctrine and its dictatorial and criminal regime, but at the same time, the the photos are very beautiful and the book, available perfectly reproduced, is a great historical contribution that cannot be missing on the shelves of history lovers and beyond.

A Question Of Scale, Seb Palmer

This book contains images that were composed well, lit appropriately and carefully looked after on their way to the printer. The result is a unique collection of very rare images that provide a crisp record of the German advance into France and the surrender of the French Government. Photographically excellent and most recommended.

Firetrench

Hoffmann was a great photographer and his images of Hitler’s tour of the French battlefield of both world wars, in effect a pilgrimage; and his stage-managed entry into Paris are genuinely superb... What I like beyond the photography is the clean, crisp reproduction on view here... There is much to admire and the price of the book makes this lesson from history an absolute bargain.

War History Online

Certainly a fascinating collection of pictures to see, especially if you look at them understanding the context of when they were taken and the original book was put together. A book intended to display the power and prowess of the German armed forces of the day.
