Any miniature wargame is greatly enhanced by realistic and evocative scenery and buildings, but commercial ready-made pieces can be expensive. Building your own can be a cost-effective and very rewarding alternative, another hobby in itself, but it can be hard to know where to start. Wargames Terrain and Buildings is a series of books aimed at giving wargamers the skills, techniques and guidance they need to create their own stunning and practical model buildings.
In this volume, master modeller Tony Hardwood shares his years of experience and presents the reader with a wide range of projects for the Napoleonic era. With the aid of step-by-step photographs, he guides the reader through building and finishing each of these models, which are organized in three sections of increasing complexity and encompass a range of scales and different materials. Nine projects are included but the techniques and skills demonstrated along the way, along with valuable advice on tools, construction materials and paints, can be adapted and applied to a much wider range of structures to grace your battlefields.
This is an excellent guide to scratch building models, and has certainly inspired me to try something with some spare card!

Overall I found the book a very useful guide to scratch building future projects. I often buy kits of buildings to include in a diorama but this should, I hope, allow me to build my own while saving money (to spend on more kits), especially as most of the materials used are easily sourced from arts & craft and hobby shops, as well as home improvement or hardware stores, and are relatively inexpensive to buy.

Tony has obviously taken copious notes, as well as photos, as he has constructed his buildings. At the end of each chapter is a full list of what materials and paints he used during the construction of the buildings, so you have some idea of how to put together a similar structure.

Though the Napoleonic era is the backdrop for the techniques skillfully demonstrated in this handy book, it is full of great insights and tips about materials, tools and paints applicable to modeling scenery for a much wider swath of history and scales.

This is a good book for those wishing to build their own terrain and not rely on MDF or plastic kits.

The book is highly recommended for anyone wanting to learn a variety of techniques for low-cost construction of buildings and other scenics.

Having been purely a kit modeller for many years, scratch building has always been a dark art to me. I mean, making something so detailed out of cupboard, glue and pixies dust must be some kind of witchcraft... right!

Well, I am pleased to say that I now understand the art, the techniques, the skill needed and the joy of the build. This is all down to this little masterpiece. Although it’s aimed at building the terrain and buildings for wargamers, all the techniques learnt can be transferred to a unique diorama.
All in all, a superb book that will end up being well used, thank you Tony.

I really enjoyed this book. Its a nice quick read with very clear and concise instructions. Tony’s techniques can be applied to any terrain structure you can come up with in any period you are keen on, so do not be put off if Napoleon is not your cup of tea. I love making terrain and this just adds fuel to my itchy fingers!

This book is marvellous in so many ways. The making of the example buildings and other structures is described step-by-step with clear photographs of each. The construction process is straight forward and uses simple, easily obtainable materials, chiefly of the ‘scrap’ variety.
The Chauvinistic Blog, James Fisher
The building of nine models is covered in the book: a Russian windmill, two-storey French house, La Belle Alliance, French pigeonnier, stone build well, Russian granary, small bakery, Hungarian chapel and Peninsula diorama. While a nominal scale is attached to each model, the step-wise construction may easily be adapted to produce them at any desired scale. In fact, the more adventurous could easily adapt the techniques for each building/structure to build something similar, yet different.

Tony has managed to produce a series of interesting buildings that could grace any wargames table. Although it is squarely aimed at the Napoleonic period, I feel that there is plenty here to interest gamers of other periods too as many of the buildings would suit earlier or later periods.

The buildings in the book are targeted at the Napoleonics gamer, but really, given the longevity of architectural styles, they can be used in a wide variety of games. For example, I think that the Hungarian Chapel will look perfect as a piece on my Victorian gothic horror skirmish wargames table.

I’ll also note that the techniques Harwood describes are generally applicable to all sorts of wargames terrain construction. In that respect, I think this book could be useful for anyone engaged in wargames modeling.

That being said, this an excellent book of building techniques and tutorials that will have anyone building quality wargame buildings pretty quickly. Once you have built two or three of these you will be able to strike out on your own and create good looking buildings and terrain for your gaming table. I highly recommend this book for your library whether you are a model building, a wargamer or both!

This is excellent, and a good incentive to make use of bits & bobs you will have around the house to save some money and provide you with an extension of a wargaming hobby into model building that will help enhance your wargaming table and experience. Some great tips and very well explained.

In my opinion it is a must for anyone who wants to experiment with the construction of small buildings, even if it is not a wargamer. For my part, the temptation to build the Hungarian Chapel or the more demanding Belle Alliance (the farm where Marshal Blucher and the Duke of Wellington met after the Battle of Waterloo) is very strong. The end result may not be like that of this beautiful book but I'm sure that by trying something will come out.
