Each volume combines detailed and informative captions with over 100 rare and unusual images. These books are a must for anyone interested in American military uniforms and the history of the United States Army
In the years since the end of the Cold War, the U.S. Army has undergone some of the most dramatic changes in history, becoming a much smaller and more technologically advanced force than ever before. With more than 100 images The U.S. Army Today illustrates the uniforms, weapons, and equipment of the American soldier in this time of change.
There is a lot in here which is worth considering. After the end of the threat of the Cold War, a re-unified Germany and particularly the threat of a Warsaw Pact invasion of Western Europe gone, there was the question of what the 'Peace Dividend' might bring. A chance to save money from withdrawing US forces from Europe had to face new challenges. One of the first was their involvement in Panama. In Operation Just Cause, over 27,000 US troops were deployed. Not too long after saw the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait and Operations Desert Shield and then Desert Storm saw the need for the deployment of large numbers of troops and heavy equipment. Then in 1993 there was involvement in Somalia, Operation Restore Hope to be followed by Operation Restore Democracy in Haiti. After that there was more European involvement as they took part in the Peace Keeping operations in Bosnia.
Military Modelling, Robin Buckland
All these operations are illustrated in the photographs shown in the book, along with much more detail information contained within the informative captions. In a time when the end of the Cold War offered an opportunity to reduce the size of armed forces, and the investment in large quantities of equipment, events took another course. With the withdrawal of forces to the continental USA so new developments in equipment and capability to allow for worldwide rapid deployment capability, the US Army went through many challenges during this period and it is well illustrated in the book, with uniforms, equipment and vehicles all included.. Even since this one was written, more new challenges have continued to arise.
