I thought this book was going to be a bit dull and hard-going, or at least it was a book my teenage son would prefer to read, but I can honestly say that I was surprised as it was very intriguing indeed. Written by different authors respected authors of the history genre, they each take a chapter and focus in on a specialist sniper. Some of the men and women included are Simo Hayha, Lyudmila Pavlichenko, Bert Kemp, Clifford Shore and more. Having not really looked at ‘the sniper’ I came into this not really knowing much, but came away from the book learning an awful lot. I had never considered a woman being a top sniper, in such a world that is dominated by men. In a very dark way they are very impressive individuals, to be that good and so well disciplined in what must be such a cold act. Also they weren’t using rifles we see today, these were rifles of the World War Two era.

Although I had started this book a bit sceptic about reading it, to be honest I couldn’t put this book down, as it was a really fascinating read from the start to end. To be honest the chapters were all written by different people but this didn’t affect the telling as they were all excellent in telling the experiences of the snipers. I would most definitely recommend this book for all to read and I would give it an impressive 5 out of 5 stars.

This is one of those books that you just pick up and read and keep going due to the compressed nature of each chapter, you will find time passing quickly without having noticed. The text is a little on the small size for my old eyes, but the font chosen helps to keep it clear. The authors have written in their own styles and in some cases that fact is obvious. This is a nice book to pick up as its very affordable and perhaps read on the bus, train, plane or just to while away a couple of hours in quiet thought.

An interesting series of stories of the wartime actions of snipers from many countries. Despite the subject and the fact of what snipers do, it is a light read and a good insight to the conditions in which a sniper operates.
