The Lusitania Story: The Atrocity… ePub (19.7 MB) Add to Basket | £6.99 |
The Lusitania Story is the complete story of this most famous ocean liner, told for the first time in a single volume. The Lusitania is today most remembered for controversy surrounding her loss by a German submarine attack in 1915, during the First World War. But this book also tells of her life before that cataclysmic event. It tells of the ground-breaking advances in maritime engineering that she represented, as well as a hitherto unheard of degree of opulence.
This book also takes a close look at the disaster which befell her and, with the help of leading experts, the authors examine the circumstances of her loss and try to determine why this magnificent vessel was lost in a mere 18 minutes.
“In my opinion, this book is the most complete, most sensitive, and yet most concise history of the life and death of the great ship, RMS Lusitania and the principal people involved in her story". Gregg Bemis - Lusitania's owner and ongoing surveyor
'This excellent book was first published in 2002, when it was deservedly praised for the original research it offered, and for its level-headed approach to an historical episode that has long been surrounded by mystery, controversy and often wild speculation. Now it's been updated for a special centenary edition, to mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Lusitania.'

Sea Breezes
From the chapter 'The Last Departure' onwards, the story becomes as gripping as the plot of a novel... Consistent, very readable and compelling. A book thoroughly to be recommended, and not just to those with a particular interest in the Lusitania herself.

The author's commendably sober investigation provides answers that are mostly irrefutable, and where they are not they are at the very least convincing and extremely plausible.

The book is always readable... the chapters describing the ship's final voyage are incredible gripping.
It's an unforgettable story, and one which the authors of this book tell superbly.

The Lusitania Saga and Myth 100 Years On (Hardback)
The RMS Lusitania entered service with Cunard in 1907. The first transatlantic express liner powered by marine turbines, she could complete the Liverpool-New York crossing in five days and had a top speed of 25 knots. She restored the British supremacy of the key North Atlantic route which the Germans had seized. All this ended on 7 May 1915 when she was torpedoed by a German U-boat and sank 18 minutes later with the loss of 1,198 passengers and crew (interestingly 39% of those aboard survived whereas only 32% of those on the Titanic survived despite the latter taking 2 hours, 40 minutes to sink.)…
