The Genus nequam group is the earliest manifestation of the 15 illuminated prophecies that captivated readers and viewers for over three centuries. They were ascribed to Joachim of Fiore, but are linked historically with the Italian Spiritual Franciscans in the late 13th century. The describe they progress of the Church from Nicholas III (1277-80) to the final angelic pontiff, and include depictions of Martin IV, Honorius IV, and other intervening popes.
