Some aircraft inspire passion, others nostalgia, but others, often the unsung heroes, are more of a connoisseur's choice. The Handley Page Victor easily falls into this last category.

In this follow-up to The Handley Page Victor: The History and Development of a Classic Jet, Volumes I and II, Roger Brooks extends his earlier historical narratives, this time offering an action-packed and riveting memoir of a career spanning forty years.

The book charts changes as they occurred in the aeronautical industry from the 1950's onwards and, as such, it should appeal to both individuals who were caught up in events at the time as well as students of the era. In addition to the aircraft itself, Roger worked extensively with tankers, refuelling the Victor as it took part in a variety of operations in the fraught Cold War era. He brings all aspects of his career to life across these pages, offering the kind of details that can only be gained by first-hand experience.

Although having left the RAF before the types high profile - roles in both the Falklands and first Gulf War, Brook's chronological view in to day-to-day life with the Victor during the Cold War is splendid.

One of the book’s great strengths is the variety of pictures, some from the Brooks’ personal collection, including ground and flight, interior and exterior. They are all black-and-white (except for the jacket) but show the aircraft from all angles and give an appreciation for its futuristic lines and appearance.

oger Brooks is already the author of a two-volume history of the Handley Page Victor, published by Pen & Sword a decade ago. He now tells his own part in the story, beginning in 1966 as a Corporal engine fitter at Marham. He explains the daily round in quite some detail. Normally aviation autobiographies are written by aircrew, so it is refreshing to share the perspective and developing expertise of a young technician on the ground. If you want to know the precise function of a 2BA open-ended spanner, how to carry out engine ground running, what a giraffe is for and much, much more, then this is the book for you.

Guy Warner, Aviation Historian

A marvellous collection of individual stories which add together to give a good picture of Victor tanker operations over so many years.

Military Model Scene, Robin Buckland

I found this to be an interesting and enjoyable read. It is maybe more suited to those with a particular interest in aircraft engineering and maintenance as opposed to the general reader.

Vintage Airfix

The author gained 40 years experience of the Victor, gaining encyclopedic knowledge of this wonderful aircraft. He has done very well to distil this knowledge into a very readable volume that includes some very interesting illustration.
