This latest, completely revised edition of the bestselling The Food Bible contains the most up-to-date research and information from the world’s top authorities on every aspect of food and diet, making it an indispensable reference book.

It discusses all the important food issues - from the ‘vegan versus meat’ debate to modern food farming and processing; from from the ‘high carb to high protein’ debate to which oil to choose for health protection. It guides you through the minefield of contradictory dietary advice with clear nutritional information. Beginning with an explanation of the basic elements that make up food – proteins, fats, carbohydrates, fibre, vitamins, minerals and the ‘new’ non-nutrients such as probiotics, the book explains how to combine them for balanced, healthy eating.

The Food Bible takes an in-depth look at all the common ailments and health problems, and discusses which foods to avoid and which can help prevent or alleviate them. There is a wealth of useful information on what to eat at every stage of your life and how best to keep your weight under control. The book contains a collection of tempting, healthy and nutritious recipes for all occasions and a final chapter containing invaluable, detailed analysis of over 300 everyday foods.

This book is a great reference guide whether you are looking to lose weight, eat healthily or change your diet to help with existing health issues. Definitely one to keep on the shelf and refer back to time and time again. I can see why the first edition sold over 300,000 copies.

I must say I was a bit sceptical at first especially because of the title The Food Bible - The Ultimate Reference Book For Food and Your Health - that's quite a claim. After a year of trying to reduce my animal products consumption I have recently moved onto fully plant based diet and thought this book might not be relevant. I was really pleased to learn that the author does not discriminate, on the contrary, the book has got a lot of advice for different diets whether you are a carnivore, veggie or a full blown vegan. My particular favourite is detailed information on all the vitamins and minerals essential for an optimal health, their functions and where to find them depending on your diet. The book is also accompanied by nice selection of beautifully photographed recipes as well as a chart of more than 300 different foods with their nutritional breakdown. I really enjoyed reading this book and am sure I'll be going back to it for reference time and time again!

This book is truly a gem as a food reference book. It is very easy to read and digest, and easy to put into practice the advice given once you have made up your mind on which way of eating suits you. Even if you are not on a diet or looking to be healthier, it’s great for a diet MOT and to check if you need to make an adjustment here or there.

We all fall off the healthy eating bandwagon, and it is hard to eat healthy with all the sugar filled treats out there, but I do think this Food Bible, makes you think again about what we are putting in our mouths.

We are what we eat! it’s taken me years to truly understand that.

I might not agree with everything written in this book, but I do love it and it does live in my kitchen.

It is essentially a reference guide that considers a variety of food related debates such as high protein vs high carb, and vegan v meat. It gives diet plan ideas to potentially alleviate health issues such as heart related problems and how to life a balanced yet healthy lifestyle. Judith is a nutrition and diet expert although the world of food is so subjective, and I don’t necessarily agree with everything in the book, it is a good introduction to dealing with every day food and I have been following some of the plans when I am cooking for myself at home.

Phat Cupcake

This book perfectly manages to do exactly what it is trying to achieve. By reading it through, you will learn how to assemble healthy meals to fit your individual needs. The book can also be used as a reference book, and is a great supplement to your cook book collection.

The recipes are easy to follow, and the recipe I tested had great results. Throughout the book you can find enough nutritional information to learn exactly why these recipes are healthy, and how you can adapt them to your personal needs. The Food Bible does not attempt to be a cook book itself, but can rather be used to help you analyse and understand the nutritional details of recipes you find online or in cook books.

I highly recommend the book to anyone who is interested in learning more about healthy eating habits and nutrition.

Hint of Healthy

Six wonderfully written and in-depth chapters help to guide the reader through the minefield of contradictory dietary advice which we are bombarbed with on almost daily basis by giving clean nutritional information, beginning with an explanation of the basic elements which make up food, ie. proteins, fats, carbohydrates, fibre vitamins, minerals and the "new" non-nutrient elements such as pro-biotics. If you have ever wondered how to combine it all for balanced healthy eating, all the information you need it in this book... I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to be more knowledgeable about the foods they eat and who is looking for a healthier diet. Delicious recipes and eating plans for all occasions and a comprehesive guide to the nutrients in over 200 foods.

What I really liked about this book is the sensible, balanced and unbiased approach. It doesn’t champion any of the diets that advocate restricting a particular food group. Instead, it focuses on what is known based on large ‘overview’ studies.

Searching for Spice

Twenty years after owning the original version of this book, my own life and nutritional needs have changed considerably. This updated book is now a valuable tool in my reference library – not only because I live in a place with an appalling internet connection and it’s easier to fact check the old school way with books, but because this book contains everything I could possibly need to know as a mother and 40-something-year-old woman feeding her family. Plus, my 10-year-old has all the questions these days. This book will help me answer some of them.

For anyone interested in knowing more about food and nutrition, this book is for you.

I believe there is something for everyone in this book and personally I learned things about some foods of which I was previously unaware. this has made me rethink my diet. As the book covers such a wide spectrum of issues, I think more in depth reading might be needed if you discovered a particular area of interest, but it definitely is a great starting point. Useful and appetising recipes are included in part of the book.

I was interested to read The Food Bible as I've become much more conscious of what I eat in the past couple of years, trying to make sure that my diet is balanced with plenty of fruits and vegetables. The 2019 edition of the Food Bible by Judith Wills offers a comprehensive overview of nutrition and guidelines for healthy eating and balanced diet. The book is a perfect guide for anyone interested in improving their eating habits or losing some weight, whether by incorporating more greens into their diet or swapping unhealthy foods with healthier options.

The book can be easily navigated as it's split into a few sections. The sections I found the most interesting were Food as Medicine and Food for the Time of Your Life which suggests foods suitable for different ages from childhood to later years, including a chapter on pregnancy and breastfeeding. Throughout the book there are beautiful photographs of foods, plants and spices making the reading experience colourful and more fun.

The book also contains numerous healthy recipes ranging from little bites to dinners and desserts. The last section of the book offers a nutritional breakdown of over 300 foods and also advising on the number of calories. This is really useful if you are trying to either lower or increase intake of a particular mineral, vitamin or other nutrition.

GoodReads, Nadia

A hardback book showing a wonderful variety of fresh fruit and vegetables on the cover.

This book is full of mouth watering recipes, money saving tips, and how to maintain a balanced diet.
It also lists which foods are high in salt and fat content, healing herbs and spices, food as medicine, what each vitamin is good for and which your body can absorb easily, and how to manage weight control.

Proof indeed that you don’t need faddy diets for health. Just eat good food sensibly.

An extremely informative read and a book that I shall refer to for many years to come.

This amazing book is something of an eye opener about food. I learnt more from this book than from all the BBC2 documentaries that have been on during the past decade. Clear, colourful images, charts and tables tell you everything you need to know about the food you’ve been eating and what it is doing to you. Essential reading for just about everyone.

My top six most interesting and important cook books

Then there is The Food Bible, by Judith Wills. The subtitle, I think “the ultimate reference book for food and your health” makes it sound more stodgy than it is. It is in fact a no-nonsense compendium of what is healthy, what makes a balanced diet, food as medicine (including the right diet for diabetics, cancer sufferers, etc. food for weight control, food for different stages of life, food for health and pleasure. She discusses, sensibly and dispassionately, the advantages and difficulties of vegan eating, the truth about processed foods, organics, supplements, diet fads. It really is a go-to book if you want an informed answer about any ingredient or any diet. It’s all there.

Filled to the brim with useful health tips and even a section discussing the controversial area of diets and weight control, providing a wealth of useful information on how to put your health first at all times. Such an interesting read and something anyone would find useful to have!
