The Art and Making of Fantasy Miniatures is a showcase of some of the best talent in the industry. Compiled with the cooperation of eleven of the most innovative companies from Europe, the UK and USA, it shows what goes in to the creative process of taking an initial concept from two-dimensional sketches and translating it into a three-dimensional figurine ready for collectors and tabletop gamers. Game designers, artists and sculptors explain their part in bringing these miniature works of art to life. The book is lavishly illustrated with over 1,000 images, including concept art, work-in-progress sculpts and beautifully painted miniatures.

The book features miniatures from games and companies such as Aradia Miniatures, Alkemy (Alchemist Miniatures), Avatars of War, Godslayer (Megalith Games), Guild Ball (Steamforged Games), Relicblade (Metal King Studio), WARMACHINE and HORDES (Privateer Press), RUMBLESLAM (TTCombat), Drakerys (Don’t Panic Games), Kings of War (Mantic Games) and Freeblades (DGS Games).

This is a visually impressive and inspiring book that gives an insight and introduction into the world of fantasy gaming, and to a number of the products available and finishing techniques that can be applied in order to pursue the hobby to it's many levels.

IPMS Magazine, Issue 3 - 2021

Review by Peter Knight

This is not a book to read through in a hurry, as each page is a showcase of brilliant artwork both 2D and 3D, all presented like an illuminated manuscript on the page, the presentation and visual design of this book being as much a work of art as the miniatures presented in it.

Kitmaster Collectors Club

A wonderful catalogue of works.

Miniaturas JM

It would make a nice gift for any hobbyist who likes to paint and remember not all gamers like the task of painting. I enjoyed reading the book, it covers some of the best companies producing miniatures today.

Irregular Magazine, Spring 2020 – reviewed by Jason Hubbard

This fabulous book is copiously and brilliantly illustrated with fine examples of what can be achieved in the realms of fantasy and dungeons and dragons wargaming and the associated miniature figurines.

Books Monthly

This is a well-written, informative and visually-outstanding book.

The Art and Making of Fantasy Miniatures Book is first of all a lavishly illustrated high-quality art book filled with plenty of pictures of wonderful artwork and miniature creations from a nice selection of wargame companies including both small one-person companies but also covering large companies such as Mantic Games and Privateer Press. The selection of covered companies is really good as the book covers several well-known companies but also indie companies such as Metal King Studio which is certainly worth checking out if you like small skirmish miniature games!

The author Jamie Kendall offers a great way to learn about the covered miniature companies, their founding and especially their own creative processes behind the production of their popular tabletop miniatures from idea to finished sculpture. Although not an all-inclusive guide to the design and creation of miniatures, The Art and Making of Fantasy Miniatures Book by Pen and Sword Books gives a good idea of the love and work involved in the artistic process of miniature production divided in eleven chapters each covering a different company. So if you're interested in learning more about the miniature design process from innovative wargame companies, make sure to grab this book and start exploring the great artistic journey your miniatures undergo on their way to the tabletop!

Wargame News and Terrain

A large landscape format book of 238-pages this is a real beauty. The quality of the artwork, the figure painting and photography are all showcased to the best advantage with the quality of the paper and production of the book... Both the beautifully painted miniatures and the equally excellent 2D artwork illustrations are simply superb. I don't have this type of imagination myself to come up with these ideas and I'm not a sculptor, but as a modeller I can really appreciate and enjoy looking at them. Excellent.

Military Model Scene, Robin Buckland

Jamie Kendall introduces this book as “an art museum exhibit in book form”. I think it is better than that. Some books are just beautiful. The artwork in The Art & Making of Fantasy Miniatures is breath-taking in its imagination and rewards the patient eye. The painted figures are inspirational for anyone, from professionals to daubers like me. If you are interested in how figures are conceived and put into production, you will enjoy this book. If you just like looking at great miniatures, The Art & Making of Fantasy Miniatures will keep you happy for many hours.
