he latest Pen and Sword text from the Images of War series is possibly one of its finest works. Author Ian Baxter has delivered what is brilliant in its vast array of information and stunning photographs. Well written and somewhat more extensive than other of the series texts this work will excite both the historical reader as well as the period builder of models.

What sets this book apart is the coverage of the theatre’s action in extremely clear photographic detail which are some of the best ever seen in the series.

The extensive and expert review of tank, halftrack and armor car models and variants.

In-depth description of each model type and its features and applications.

In its entirety you have one of the finest photographic studies which include a brisk written assessment of the period and operations. It had a superb flow to it and would be a great addition to any Second World War library. I would highly recommend it and include it with David Mitchelhil-Green’s With Rommel in the Desert and Inside the Afrika Corps by Reiner Kriebel, both published by Pen and Sword.

These recent publications continue the Pen and Sword effort to remain cutting edge in new works detailing the finer points of the desert campaign its historic operations and equipment. Without doubt one can still glean some new facts and information from these studies and enhance their knowledge of the period. Another must have Ian Baxter text which I strongly recommend for your enjoyment.

This offering from Pen and Sword as part of their ‘Images of War’ series is another great addition to that series. This book I feel can be best described as a visual history of the people and vehicles present at events that took place during the time the Germans were fighting in North Africa. These pictures are most of use to the modeller who likes to display their models on a diorama as this book offers a lot of visual reference possibilities in that respect. The cost alone of this title from Pen and Sword make it a must have for anyone with an interest in the Afrika Korps during World War Two.

War History Online

As expected, the photographs were excellent, with several showing Rommel and his staff poring over plans or discussing the battle. The ones showing the various pieces of armour were very good and gave me some ideas for future diorama/vignette projects. What I really liked was that they weren't showing "action" pics but photos from before or after battle or away from the battlefield, making them more of a personal nature.

The very popular Images of War series continues to expand with each book achieving a high standard but this is a volume that will prove specially successful because of the interest in the Desert Fox. The Germans were drawn into the North African Campaign as they were drawn into the Balkans, because Italian collapse threatened German war aims. - Much Recommended
