Tank Craft 8: Jagdpanther Tank… Paperback Add to Basket | £14.99 |
Combining the destructive firepower of the 88mm gun with the outstanding mobility of the Panther series, the Jagdpanther is quite probably the best-known tank destroyer of the Second World War. In the vehicle's first action on 30 July 1944, three Jagdpanthers managed to destroy eleven British tanks in a vicious two minute firefight near the village of Les Loges in Normandy, cementing the Jagdpanther's reputation as a potent tank killer. In his fifth book in the TankCraft series, Dennis Oliver uses contemporary photographs and meticulously researched, superbly presented colour and monochrome illustrations to tell the story of these heavy self-propelled anti-tank guns and the units which operated them in the German defence of the Western Front. As with all the books in the TankCraft series, a large part of this work showcases available model kits and aftermarket products, complemented by a gallery of expertly constructed and painted models. Technical details as well as modifications introduced during production and in the field are also explained giving the modeller all the information and knowledge required.
This book is aimed at the modeller being very concise in the information provided within its pages. It firstly details the history, design, development and performance of the vehicle along with archive photos of the tank in service with good colour plates, as well as in action. Added to this is a number of detailed model builds, showing the various kits available with accessories. Very useful and informative!

Dennis Oliver has garnered a place with me as a firm favourite due to his writing style and how information is presented to the reader. He also tackles subjects that require much larger page counts than these books allow for, but for the most part I am very impressed with his efforts. This particularly offering provides a lot of factual information in both the written and photographic format. The modelling section gives the modeller some directions with the aftermarket being particularly useful.

The colour profiles, or Camouflage And Markings illustrations are, as usual, excellent... another great instalment in this excellent series.

Nobody can say that the German Army did not have a machine for every aspect of the war. The Jagdpanther tank destroyer is a prime example of the industrious power of the Third Reich at the time. Once again, Dennis Oliver has given us a culmination of great reference material and quality modeling.

Pros: Really interesting concept to combine historical, technical and modeling content in one book. Nicely illustrated. Good selection of paint schemes tied to specific units and periods; good kit and accessory reviews; good, brief unit histories.

I already wrote about one book in this series, Sherman Tanks (Tankcraft #2), and now have read a few more, both in paper and in eBook versions. The more I leaf through them, the more enthusiastic I get. These are real gems for both scale modelers and those of us interested in the technical aspects of these tanks.

This popular series is aimed primarily at model makers and engineers but it contains first class illustration and a very effective text overview of the Jagdpanther. This new book covers the development, on the Panther chassis, of a very effective tank destroyer – Highly Recommended.
