This is a book that looks at the 0-6-0 tender goods locomotives of the Southern Railway, from the steam locomotive classes taken over at the railway grouping in 1923, through to the two classes introduced during Southern Railway days, that of the Q and Q1 classes.

The Southern Railway had a rich and varied number of 0-6-0 tender goods classes, originating from all three former main line pre grouping companies, many of them lasted until the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Many of the older Victorian and Edwardian classes of locomotive taken over in 1923, did not last very long with the new company, but are covered here for historical and modelling interest.

"They are all well produced and feature a blend of textual information about the locomotives, diagrammatic drawings, a lavish collection of photographs and tabulated data... As for a recommendation, if the classes covered are of interest to you then these are quality books filling a niche market and worth buying."

John New, The Stephenson Locomotive Society Journal, March/April 2022

With a good range of photographs, some technical specifications and details of where engines were based and operated this remains a valuable guide to a varied group of engines. At ÂŁ30 it is excellent value for money.

The Society of Model and Experimental Engineers Journal - April 22

This latest offering in the 'Locomotive Portfolios' series features 0-6-0 tender locomotives taken over by the SR at the Grouping and subsequent new builds, with all the details of construction, line drawings, dates, and some timings.
This format allows for a good size of photographic reproduction; this is evinced throughout the book with excellent results, allowing the feel of the railway and it's environs to be show with good effect, mostly monochrome, with some colour towards the last chapter.
As noted in the bibliography, much of the information, if not all, has been published before, most notably in the society's volumes by D.L Bradley. However, this book does allow a much better size for the interpretation of photographic evidence particularly for the modeller, something which constrained our original books.
The book is printed on good quality paper, well laid out with a sensible typography, and can be recommended, especially for members who are not in possession of our publications, on the subject.

The Railway Observer, Volume 91, July 2021

"With a good range of photographs, some technical specifications and details of where engines were based and operated this remains a valuable guide to a varied group of engines. At ÂŁ30 it is excellent value for money."

SMEE Journal/Model Engineer

"Worthwhile and readable publication."

Tenterden Terrier (Col. Stephens Railway Museum)

An interesting and superbly documented book.

Miniaturas JM

As with the other books in this series this one is well-produced and deals with its subject matter in a stylish and authoritative manner. For all it is a useful addition to our stock of railway literature, for Southern enthusiasts it ought to be a delight! Well recommended.

Backtrack, September 2021

The book is to the usual extremely high standard that we have come to associate with Pen & Sword publications. It comes with the highest recommendation.

Paul E Davies, The Journal of the Friends of the National Railway Museum - Summer 2021

This books is highly recommended and fills an important gap in the published histories of many of the unglamorous but long-lasting locos that kept Southern England’s freight traffic moving throughout the period from the late 1880s to the 1960s.

West Somerset Railway Association

Packed with photographs and specialist knowledge, this will appeal to railway buffs and train modellers alike.

Sussex Life, June/July - review by books editor Angela Wintle

Another classic from David Maidment who this time looks at the Southern Railway’s 0-6-0 Tender Goods locomotives. This series of locomotive histories are a must for anyone remotely interested in the type of engines seen on the Southern Railway in its heyday.
