This book is one of the Pen & Sword Locomotive Portfolio series and covers the rebuilding by Richard Maunsell of the South Eastern & Chatham Railway ‘D’ and ‘E’ 4-4-0s as ‘D1’ and ‘E1’ locomotives with higher pressure boilers and long-travel valve events following the Churchward principles. The book also covers the SE&CR ‘L’ class designed by Maunsell’s predecessor, Harry Wainwright, with modifications made by Maunsell just before their delivery in 1914. Maunsell then designed a further 2 cylinder 4-4-0, the ‘L1’ for the Victoria – Folkestone 80-minute expresses of the mid-1920s and finally the 3-cylinder ‘V’ (the ‘Schools’ class), his masterpiece, for express services on all three constituent parts of the Southern Railway.

Design, construction, operations and performance of these locomotives are described and profusely illustrated with over 300 black & white and colour photos from their construction right through to their final demise in 1962, together with an update on the three ‘Schools’ that have been preserved and operate on Britain’s heritage steam railways.

"They are all well produced and feature a blend of textual information about the locomotives, diagrammatic drawings, a lavish collection of photographs and tabulated data... As for a recommendation, if the classes covered are of interest to you then these are quality books filling a niche market and worth buying."

John New, The Stephenson Locomotive Society Journal, March/April 2022

The design and construction of each class, and their histories, are enlivened by a fine selection of photographs (b/w and colour), plus performance logs of workings, both regular trains and specials. Personal reminiscences add a human touch to what might have been a rather dry text: the author even confesses to having very few personal reminiscences of the E1s, being a South Western man! Gradient profiles are included towards the rear, the better to understand the feats of haulage on the former SECR, along with line diagrams and technical information on each of the classes.

For a railway largely made up of electric multiple units – provision of which Maunsell played a large part – the Southern possessed a lively and powerful fleet of 4-4-0s, which are given fine treatment in this new volume.

Railway Modeller, July 2019

A curious and interesting book for those who love rail history of all time and who like stories based on real facts.

The author has followed his railway career with an enthusiasm and passion that comes out in his articles and books on the subject. This is a must read book for all steam and railway enthusiasts but it is also something for the general reader to wet their appetite and learn more a world that has passed, but only recently.
