Born in 1926 and commissioned into The Rifle Brigade in 1945 Frank Kitson saw active service in Kenya, Malaya, Cyprus and Northern Ireland and involvement with Oman. He commanded 1st Battalion The Royal Green Jackets before taking over 39 Infantry Brigade in Belfast at the height of the Troubles. After commanding 2nd Armoured Division he became Commandant of The Staff College. His final appointment was C-in-C UK Land Forces.


His decorations included two Military Crosses, the MBE, OBE, CBE, KCB and GBE. He wrote numerous published military and historical works and held many honorary appointments. Throughout his life he pursued country pursuits with skill and vigour.


A devoted family man, he and his wife Elizabeth (nee Spencer) had three daughters. Lady Kitson was appointed OBE for founding the Army Families Federation.


General Frank died in January 2024.
