This book contains selected images from three different Royal Flying Corps albums, offering a unique insight into their wartime experiences. Photographs include training shots taken in Canada and at Tangmere, as well as shots of aircraft in and around the River Crouch in Essex, an area with a particular and long standing connection with military aviation. There is a large variety of different aircraft featured, as well as images of pilots and esteemed officers. Also included are a number of photographs from the collection of the late Lieutenant William Shorter, who was shot down over German lines at the age of twenty. These consolidated albums work to illuminate further our understanding of the First World War and the important part played by the Royal Flying Corps within this wider history.
This is another interesting and well-presented book in the Images of War series. It combines an expert narrative with the display of numberous period photographs… Overall this is a interesting and entertaining book. All of the photos are from the period and the vast majority have reproduced very well. Only a few have suffered the effects of sepia/bleaching/ageing ect. And they produce a very effective insight into the RFC and its operations. This set of albums is remarkable and the book achieves its objective by giving a photographic illustration of the RFC.
