In a single volume, Roman Republic at War catalogues and offers a brief description of every significant battle fought by the Roman Republic between 480 and 31 BC (and most of the minor ones too). The information in each entry is drawn exclusively from Ancient texts, in order to offer a brief description of each battle based solely on the information provided by the earliest surviving sources which chronicle the event. This approach provides the reader a concise foundation of information to which they can then confidently apply later scholarly interpretation presented in secondary sources in order to achieve a more accurate understanding of the most likely battlefield scenario.
In writing the battle descriptions, the author has not sought analyse the evidence contained in the surviving accounts, nor embellish them beyond that which was necessary to provide clarity to the modern reader. He allows the original writers to speak for themselves, presenting the reader with a succinct version of what the ancient chroniclers tell us of these dramatic events. It is an excellent first-stop reference to the many battles of the Roman Republic.

Prof. Taylor (Hardin-Simmons), who has specialized in Roman history, has complied a valuable reference guide to the battles of the Roman Republic. He opens with an introduction outlining the major trends in Roman military practice under the Republic, noting the evolution of the army as it met and adapted to various foes, often adopting useful practices from their enemies, and then gives us a brief analysis of the relevant sources in ancient literature and from archaeological finds.

The book is to be praised for it's ease of reading and consultation, enhanced by the addition of explanatory maps and diagrams of some of the most complex descriptions (useful as teaching material for undergraduates).

To conclude, this volume appears a decent reference book for undergraduates, teachers and, more generally, as a basic resource for beginning more thorough and in-depth studies of the battles of Republican Rome.

This book will certainly lead readers to fill in the gaps by reading more Roman history. If that is all the book does it is certainly worth its weight, but the book is much more than that and is a great reference for old hands of Roman history. The maps are especially useful for understanding exactly what each side in the battles had to contend with.

This is a very convenient one-stop-shop for quick first references on all of the battles of Republican Rome from the Abas River to Zela.
This is a compilation of Roman wars between 498 to 31 bc. The first part of the book is an excellent introduction that describes the general tactical history of Rome. Detailed diagrams are included that illustrate the author’s narrative clearly. The actual battle entries are preceded with an alphabetical list. Some entries are longer than others and some have diagrams. These are directly from the original texts and best of all the sources are listed on every entry. This is excellent for anyone writing using multiple sources. This is a must have for anyone interested in Ancient Rome or ancient warfare!

This amazing book by Don Taylor catalogues the entire canon of Roman Republican campaigns in a single volume, drawing on. amongst other thigns, contemporary accounts. Dr Don Taylor holds a PhD in European History with a concentration in Ancient Mediterranean Studies from Fulbright College of the University of Arkansas (USA). Since 1995 he has served as a university professor in European and Ancient History at Hardin-Simmons University, Texas and he has published and/or lectured on various topics of Greek and Roman history.
