From almonds to walnuts, chia to sunflower seeds, nuts and seeds are rising stars of the nutrition world. Rich in healthy fats, protein, vitamins, minerals, plant chemicals and the all-important fibre needed to guard against disease, diets containing nuts and seeds have long been linked with greater health and longevity.
Nuts – and seeds – are bursting with exactly the right combination of nutrients we need to keep our bodies working as they should to help us stay healthy throughout life.
The latest scientific research now suggests that just a handful of nuts a day could help you stay a healthy weight and lower your risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke and some cancers.
Patsy Westcott scans the science and explains how including nuts and seeds in your daily diet could supercharge your health and vitality and help you age healthily.
What I liked best in this book is that she presents the medical research in a balanced way. If a study is made on 15 people, she mentions that. Obviously, a study on 15 American men who eat a meat-based, processed diet is not going to be very relevant for me, an European woman, and also a vegetarian for over a decade. Of course they are slightly relevant when it comes to diet related issues, such as high cholesterol. Those kind of studies are interesting and worth mentioning, but their limitations should be presented and Westcott does that throughout the book, which is great.
Coffee and Books
If you want to add more nuts and seeds into your diet, reading this book can be very helpful. Also, diversifying both the kind of nuts and how they are prepared is very interesting and she highlights this in the book. At the end of each presentation of a nut or seed, she makes suggestions on how to add them into the diet, which is a nice addition too.

Who knew that there was so much to nuts and seeds? This book takes a comprehensive view of many of the commonly available nuts and seeds, including the latest research into their nutritional value and their medicinal effects. I've never looked at nuts and seeds from the point of view of their health benefits before - fascinating and educational at the same time. Reading this book allows you to choose which nuts and seeds will benefit your health and not only that will give you some alternative ways to use them in your diet. Well worth a read.

Why is it that the things that are so tasty are always so bad for you? Well almost always. It turns out that those nuts you like to munch on are actually packed with nutrients and protein. Westcott lists, explains and tells how to use each type of nut and seed, from the familiar, like cashews and peanuts, to the less well known (for snacking anyway) like chia and hemp seeds. A handy guide for those who want to eat more healthfully and not give up on taste and satisfaction.

The photography is very well done, full color and illustrative. The text is clear and easy to understand. The last section of the book includes a glossary with layman accessible language explaining some of the biochemistry and physiology discussed in the previous chapters. The author also does a great job explaining the hierarchy of evidence; how to be a critical reader and why some research is considered better than other research... This is a well researched, very well written and presented book. Five stars.

This is a very comprehensive look at edible nuts and seeds. Each listing includes nutrients, what health problems it's good for, ways to incorporate it into your diet, and more. In addition, the author explains very clearly the studies she used in her research, and carefully cites information, giving the reader better transparency about what is stated. I really appreciated that. This would be great for anyone interested in improving their diet and health, for vegans and vegetarians, for dieticians and nutritionists, for just about anyone!

This is a nut and seed bible, full of convincing evidence as to why we should all be eating plenty of this natural fast food. I love them anyway but it was nice to read all the health benefits for each variety. I have found a few more varieties that I currently don't eat that I am rushing out to buy. The book is very well structured and easy to read with just the right amount of information. Some lovely pictures are included... Overall an excellent book.
