Nine Battles to Stanley is a soldiers account of the ground fighting on South Georgia and the Falklands.
What makes this book unique is the fascinating and objective way the author describes the experiences, view points and comparative qualities of both sides to the conflict. Fresh light is shed on the whole campaign even the best known battles at Goose Green (where Col. H. Jones won his VC) and the night attack on Mount Tumbledown.
I have read many books on the Falklands since 1982. I have had the privilege of being trained by many veterans and worked with lots more. I’ve also been fortunate to spend over 10 months on the islands in the 90s.
Pete Hawtin
Of all the histories, this is probably the best I’ve read, giving as it does a balanced view across all levels. If you want one book that says it all, buy this one. However, please be warned that it is littered with spelling errors, typos, repeated sentences and on occasion factual error (Scimitar CVR(T) mounts 30mm Rarden Cannon, not 75mm gun - Scorpion mounts 76mm gun) which does begin to distract from an otherwise outstanding book.
