Not your Grandma's crochet. Today's crochet artists have access to fibers and designs that mean there is no limit to what can be created with a hook and threads. MODERN CROCHET STYLE has so many great patterns that work up quickly and easily, leaving you time to make more. They make great gifts for yourself or others. This book is a valuable addition to me pattern library and would be an excellent gift for your favorite "hooker".

The Simple Things

As a novice of crochet, and eager to learn, I was impressed with the patterns and projects presented in this book. However, from the content of this book, I'd say this book is more for the experienced crocheters looking for new ideas for future projects to add to their collection. I loved the photos of each design and the colors used really popped on the page. If anyone was to make me one of these corchet designs, I would be very happy. Once I get enough practice, I'll try one of these crochet designs in hope to succeed as a future gift for some special people.

A book for the experienced crocheter looking to add to their collection. This book deserves 5 stars.

Great book for all those interested in crochet. Lots of ideas on items to make. Well written and easy to follow.

Modern Crochet Style by Lindsey Newns is a very nice collection of unique crochet patterns featuring different techniques to hone in your crafting skills. I would say this book is for the advanced beginner onwards and would make a nice addition to any crocheters pattern book library.

The book is divided into four chapters. The author begins the book with terminology, substitutions/conversions, abbreviations, and techniques.

Chapter One: Spring
Chapter Two: Summer
Chapter Three: Autumn
Chapter Four: Winter

In chapter one, I love the scrunchie pattern. The woven wall hanging reminds me of macrame work. The textured kitchen cloths would make a nice housewarming or hostess gift. In chapter two, the eye mask is so cute, and I look forward to making several of them. The tassel basket is a great way to use extra pieces you have stashed away. The placemats technique is an amazing way to combine two different types of materials into one project.

In chapter three, the “Soak” bathmat is unique. The duffel bag would be great either as a tote or a large purse. The patterned scarf is a twist on traditional granny squares. Chapter four has hat, cowl, scatter run, and holiday stocking.

I really enjoyed this book. The projects are all different and it is nice to see an assortment of projects than the more traditional crochet projects. I recommend this to anyone looking for new projects.

Great crochet instructional book for beginners to intermediate crocheters. It included beautifully styled photos for all the finished projects with great yarn and color choices. I especially loved how every chapter was a season; spring, summer, fall, and winter. Each season included several projects that go with the season. New techniques and old with pictures and detailed descriptions were included. Abbreviated glossary was also included. I would recommend this book to my crochet friends.

My reading has faced a few alterations in the past few months because I started to pay serious attention to crochet and knitting again. One of the primary reasons(there were a few) was this book.
I received a logbook of sorts with tiny checks with a large order of yarns a couple of years ago. I never figured out how to note down the stitches on it until I got to this book.
I have not worked proper Fair Isle style before and have not done complicated colour work either. This book let me learn and implement it with ease! I tried only one of the patterns in here, but the clear instructions and the simplicity of the projects were refreshing. I jazzed up my version of the hat in the book, mostly because I only had a random collection of yarns, and I wanted it to be warmer.
I would love to keep a copy of this on the shelf to browse and adapt designs from. There is nothing exceptionally novel in the patterns and suggestions within these pages, but it is done in a manner that greatly boosted my productivity, and that is all a person really wants out of such books, right?

This book was both informative and easy to follow. The pictures were vibrant and well placed. I can't wait to try some of these patterns myself! These are not your Grandma's crochet patterns. An old craft ready for a new age.

Modern Crochet Style might just be my new favorite go-to book when I'm looking for a fun, meditative project to work on for a weekend.

As soon as I flipped through, I saw so many projects I wanted to start immediately. So far, I've made the Geo Hat (so cute) and the Patchwork Scarf (which is easily my favorite design in the whole book). I'm a fairly experienced crocheter and have read dozens of patterns from different designers, and I can honestly say that Newns does an excellent job of providing clear, detailed instructions for every project. There's also a great range to the difficulty of the projects; none of them are too complex (though some provide a good challenge), and there are plenty of quick-and-fun simple projects. I think both intermediate-experienced and beginner crocheters will find something they love in this title.

Also included in Modern Crochet Style is a helpful stitch glossary, dozens of colorful, beautiful photos, as well as a super helpful "Tips" section for the different projects. Definitely recommend this title for anyone looking for unique, cute crochet projects!

NetGalley, Laura Gubata

I was able to scan this book and look at the techniques used in each pattern. The patterns are cute, use a lot of common stickes in modern and creative ways. The directions seem easy to follow making this book a great addition to any library or crafters bookshelf.

A brilliant selection of crochet patterns for experienced makers to attempt.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Modern Crochet Style has fifteen projects and is divided into five main chapters: Introduction and each season.

The Introduction includes the crocheting abbreviations, conversions for UK/US terms, and techniques for each stitch. Some of the stitches have descriptions only of how to do it, whereas others include photographs.

The Spring, Summer, and Winter chapters each have four projects to complete and Autumn has three.

Each project has plenty of photographs to show the end project and the steps needed, alongside the materials required to make the item. There is a mixture of projects, be they for the home - cushion cover, placemat - or as a fashion accessory - scrunchy, scarf, hat.

I like this book and it would be great for a beginner like my daughter who I have just taught the basics to.

Loved it.... this is one of those instances where I wish I had one craft bone in my body. I have tried but can not get the hang of crocheting. I really want to try to make one of those placemats with macrame cord. Simply gorgeous! This book gives me hopes that I can at least make something.... five stars, I really enjoyed looking at the patterns even if I know nothing about what it means.

Love this book! Crochet is definitely having a moment, and whether you’re an old hand or a newcomer to the art, this book will have something for you! I love the stylish patterns and easy to follow instructions and have already started making a granny square cushion inspired by this book!

I am an intermediate crocheter so I loved this, so many new designs to make, I am so used to similar designs being rehashed, but not here. The patterns were well written and easy to follow, with clear instructions and diagrams to help the reader. It’s colourful and inviting, I think this is perfect for the beginner to the advanced crocheter and I thoroughly recommend this to everyone interested in crafting for stress relief too.

I have one problem with this book! – I can’t crochet fast enough to do all of the projects I want to do. Nice clear book, with lovely illustrations.

Really fancy a go at the fruit placemats as I’ve never tried crocheting around a chord before. The scrap rug is a wonderful idea and let’s face it most of us with a wool habit have plenty leftover yarns from projects! I want to make everyone Christmas stockings and pompom hats, but I might have to start now for next year.

I particularly like the author’s tips section for each pattern, as sometimes there is that elusive piece of information that makes or breaks something you make. Lovely book which had ideas pinging around my brain as I looked through it.

This book certainly lived up to its title!

The issue I’ve found with crochet (and knitting) books in the past is quite often the patterns are old fashioned and frankly things I would never wear/display. Lindsey has created a book full of modern fun patterns that most importantly are useable!

I loved the layout and design of the book, the photos are gorgeous and the instructions are simple and easy to follow. It’s perfect for beginners and more advanced makers alike. The conversion page is so handy, particularly for people new to the craft. I also thought it was a nice touch to separate the patterns in to the four seasons.

My favourite designs in the book are the Scrunchies, the Woven Wall Hanging, the Textured Cloths, the Tassel Basket, the Geo Hat and the Scandi Stocking. I can’t wait to start making them all!

A fantastic book to have your shelves or a perfect gift for a crocheter! I would definitely recommend!

NetGalley, Michelle Lyons

I have taken up crochet in the last year and have fallen in love with the craft. The ease that this craft can picked up is amazing. Unlike knitting where you use two or more needles to create your work, in crochet, you only use a single hook. It amazes me what this little tool is capable of making. Before picking up Modern Crochet Style I have made myself 2 cardigans, 4 beanies, 2 pillow cases, 2 wall hanging in tapestry style and I am currently working on a crop jumper and a corner to corner wall hanging / blanket (I have yet to decide how I want this displayed since it is the Dungeons & Dragons ampersand logo but the piece is going to be HUGE). So while I do have some experience, I would still only call myself a beginner in this craft. Picking up this book has given me more projects to work on, and I cannot wait to expand my repertoire.

Modern Crochet Style is written in UK terminology, but do not worry as a handy US to UK terminology guide is included. If you are not sure which style you have learnt, then do not fear as Newns explains which style you have learnt very well. I personally learnt the US terminology (it was just the YouTube that I happened to learn it from, which if you are interested in watching videos on how to crochet I would highly recommend TL Yarn Crafts!), but I was able to adapt fairly easily to the use of UK terminology.

Modern Crochet Style cover everything from the absolute basics of how to chain and do double-crochets, all the way to completing your own wall hangings, pillow cases and coasters! The patterns provided are split into 4 seperate season, for which one suit which season.

Spring will give you scrunchies, a gingham bag and more. For summer, you get and eye mask, a loopy cushion and placemats with a summery theme of fruits. A bathmat and patchwork scarf greet you in Autumn / Fall. And finally, winter provides you with a gorgeous geo hat and leopard cowl to keep you warm in the cooler months.

Each pattern is very well written, with handy pictures to help guide you along at times. For the patterns that require colour work, the chart is included that has numbering and also how to complete your stitch to make the colour change as seamless as possible.

While an absolute beginner could pick up this book and not get too confused, if you have a few basic stitch learnt, you will go far with Modern Crochet Style as your guide.

This book would be the gift that keeps on giving because you give the book as a gift to a new crocheter and they could make a variety of gifts for friends and family.

I also found the photos, instructions, and demonstrations clear and helpful. I would place myself as an advanced beginner and I found this book accessible.

NetGalley, Sara Hill

"Modern Crochet Style" is a beginner friendly crochet pattern book that covers a wide range of projects. Overall, I thought the designs presented in this book were really cute and I liked how the projects showed a wide range of different crochet stitches and techniques. The Abbreviations list was in both UK and US terms which makes the book very accessible to all readers. I really like the Techniques Section which featured both basic stitches and more advanced techniques such as changing colour, tapestry crochet, and Fair Isle. The sections also went into detail about ho to create each stitch and there were photos to accompany some of the techniques. The photo quality throughout the book was fantastic and detailed. The book was divided up into four sections based on the seasons and the projects were according to each season. One aspect I really appreciated from this book was that the author included the fiber content for the yarn used for each project as well as a breakdown of the meter/yardage and weight so that the reader can easily substitute their own yarn for the project. I haven't encountered a crochet pattern book that included that info before and I think it's so helpful! Overall this book would be great for beginners and advanced crocheters alike.

This is the perfect book for the crochet beginner. The author explains everything in simple terms and includes color photos of each project. Among the cute yet simple crochet patterns are accessories like scarves and hats as well as home accessories like rugs and throw pillows. I especially liked the ruffled throw pillow. I can't wait to make one for my sofa.

I'm somewhat new to crochet, but I've read a few books with different patterns. This one was definitely unique from the rest, though!

The thing that stuck out to me as unique about this book was the different textures of the patterns! One thing I love about crochet items is interesting textures so I loved this.

I also love that the patterns weren't SUPER difficult, but they were definitely challenging for a beginner crocheter.

I actually have no complaints, I recommend this to anyone who crochets!

Are you tired of crochet patterns that look like they came straight from the 80s (or before)? If so, I suggest you turn to Lindsey Newns' Modern Crochet Style. This book is chock full of great patterns with a contemporary flare. Most crochet enthusiasts will enjoy this book, regardless of skill level, as there are plenty of images and instructions to get the job done right. My favorite pattern is the last on in the book - the Christmas stocking. It is beautiful and with the holidays quickly approaching, I am looking forward to creating one myself. Speaking of the holidays, this would make an excellent gift for the crafty people on your list.

As a keen crocheter I am always on the look out for fun, fresh and contemporary crochet patterns.

This book is full of them! Lots of vibrant colour choices, a variety of patterns of differing levels of difficulty, some taking longer than others.

I have started the Patchwork Scarf, and though it is time consuming it is not too difficult. It is very striking already, so I will be very proud to wear this item and show it off once complete!

I like that this book contains a mixture of patterns for garments, accessories and homewares. Many books stick to one item, and there is only so many blankets you need!

A solid crochet book for the advanced beginner or an established crocheter. A good all rounder, this book caters for all whilst showing flair and style that will appeal to the more modern crocheter.

I have no crochet experience, but this book made me wish that I did - maybe I will stop spending all my time reading and get a new hobby!
The book included many projects that I would have never considered before.

A very cute small project crochet book. The instructions are clear and the projects are good for new crocheters. The color combinations and yarn combinations are playful, rather than austere, and might be fun for kids as well as adults. The projects will work up quickly and will be satisfyingly fast to complete. This book will be a good project source for beginners or someone looking for a fast project.

NetGalley, Jessica Mcclelland

What a sweet little book! I love the designs presented in this guide. It's slightly different from what you might find in other crochet books, but still feels beginner friendly while offering challenges to more experienced crocheters. I love the author's voice throughout and the creative projects.

NetGalley, Brenna Searcy

This book would be good for adventurous beginner crocheters especially for holiday gifting time.

NetGalley, Elspeth McKee

I really loved and enjoyed this book! I have been crocheting for a while now and I'm always looking fresh and exciting projects. This book has it all!!

Best Features:
-A technique section (with common stitches and photos)
-Glossary of abbreviations
-Chapters are divided by seasons
-Laid out project-by-project showcasing a variety of fabrics from raffia to wool yarns
-Every project has a list of materials needed and helpful tips
-Photos of every step of the project

I think this book makes it very easy to create these projects even if you are somewhat new to crocheting. The variety of projects (bath mats, tote bags, baskets, scarves, placemats, hats, stockings, and more) are fun to make. I look forward to opening this book every season and making a pretty project for gifts as well as for myself.

Modern Crochet is just that. Have you noticed how a lot of crochet is dated?Anybody? Well this isn’t and it’s a very different type of crochet than my past experiences. I wasn’t sure how I wanted to talk about it. It has great useful patterns that you don’t see everyday. Accessories is a perfect word that the author used and they can be made up quickly. It’s a project to project instruction and the abbreviations info is in the beginning. I love that. Followed by written instructions for how to do the stitches.
Each project has:
• what you will need
• Yarn profile (what it’s made of)
• Size, stitches
• Lindsey’s tips
• Making up (finishing the piece)
There are a lot of beautiful, colorful pictures which I like. I really can’t get enough pictures.
So I really enjoyed the 12 patterns and my favorites were the gingham bag, placemats, and the textured cloths.
I hope this was helpful.

NetGalley, Jennifer Pritchard

Modern Crochet Style is full of cute and fun projects.

I particularly liked the Soak rug. It definitely had that country farmhouse feel that most people are going for style-wise these days. It definitely gave me a bunch of ideas. I also liked the leopard print cowl design. Oh look, Christmas is around the corner. Whatever will I get (do) for my sister?!?

There's something about colder weather that makes me break out my knitting needles and crochet hooks.

The pictures are absolutely gorgeous and the patterns are so easy to follow they are an absolute dream, I love all of the colours used and all the other beautiful stitches. It’s an absolute must have addition to any crafters bookshelf as it’s suitable for both beginners and advanced crocheters.

It is rare that I find a crochet book where I would actually want to make anything. This is the exception. There are a few patterns I will try. The instructions are very clear and for a reasonably experienced crocheter the patterns are easy to follow.

NetGalley, Anni Short

Great patterns and the text was easy to follow. I am not new to crochet but I think there are patterns in here that if you are new to crochet you would learn a lot from!

NetGalley, Victoria Bee

A fun book on crochet both little and bigger projects for your home or as gifts. Some are perfect for the left over yarn that is always hard to use.. The instructions are well illustrated and some of the articles made such as hr, bathroom mat, hair tie, 3D baskets, woven and tapestry cushions - are little different from most crochet books. There are also a collection of different yarns such as raffia, hemp used and incorporating macrame cord in fruit placement mats. There are also some traditional items such as hats, scarves stockings.
A handy book to have and could be used to teach simple crochet.

I learned how to crochet years ago and I have gotten better with each year I've been doing it. I saw this book and knew that I had to review it. It has many cute crochet patterns to be able to do and some of them are easy... I'd get it for someone else who loves to crochet.

NetGalley, Charlotte Strickland

The projects are really fun and presented in a way that I feel confident that I can make them.

NetGalley, Katie Sauer

This book is a good one if you are familiar with crochet and need a few more patterns to get inspiration projects. There is a variety of skill levels and very useful household items. I was really happy to see more than just beanies or blankets here. Definitely will be making some of these projects in the future.

NetGalley, Laney Estel

This will be a new go-to book when my friends want to me to teach them how to crochet. Simple yet beautiful projects that are well explained and detailed instructions with gorgeous pictures make this a perfect book for beginners and advanced crocheters alike. I think my fav was the Pom Pom duffel bag, but there are so many projects that I will for sure end up making for myself as well as for gifts. I like that there were detailed instructions for all the stitches as well as a breakdown of yarn weights so that if you don’t have the specific one, you can substitute and still get he desired effect.
Well done!

Some beautiful crochet makes to inspire. It is good to see more unusual ideas in the projects
presented (for example using cord to make placemats and the scrap rug). The projects have a seasonal theme and are very varied.
All the techniques are very well explained at the start of the book and the patterns are clearly presented.
I think this would enable a beginner to tackle the projects with confidence and would make a delightful present for a beginner or someone with previous crochet experience.
A delightful book!

Well I absolutely loved it. I'm a mere beginner at crochet so most of these projects, which are more intermediary, felt a little beyond my skill range, but they were still simple enough that anyone who puts in the effort can learn them, I'm sure. And the project ideas were so creative and useful- just one was purely for decorative purposes. The author does an excellent job of preparing you for the project, advising on what kind of yarn to use and providing a huge list of abbreviations for both UK and US terms. I appreciated the author's thoroughness and creative ideas for each project.

A really helpful book overall, I will be keeping it aside when my skills are up to scratch.

I'm so pleased I have been introduced to Lindsey and this beautiful book. I am someone very new to crochet, currently not really straying out of my comfort zone and using the same one stitch to crochet scarves for family! I would say Modern Crochet Style is a great introduction to crochet and the different stitches but also perfect for those experienced in crochet as it includes some really nice and modern designs. I love the light, fresh photography throughout the book. The close-ups of the stitches are extremely helpful and I love the fact the book is divided into seasons with relevant designs for each season. I'm slightly daunted by some of the patterns/designs but with the instructions laid out clearly, I feel it's something achievable. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC, it's given me the inspiration to jump in and try new crochet projects!

Full of so many tips and techniques, I cannot wait to try the styles from Modern Crochet Style. That Gingham Bag, though. I look forward to adding these designs to my home and my closet. The patterns are explained in a way that is clear to understand, which I really appreciate.

Modern Crochet Style will revive crocheting just like macrame has come back. Lindsey Newns has created beautiful projects that are also innovative in technique. Creating scrunchies from hair bands will be easy for the beginning crocheter. Then they can move on to a granny square scarf featured on the cover. Using crochet to make a background for a woven hanging or to make a rug from a crochet/weave hybrid is ingenious.

I haven't crocheted in years and this book has me itching to dust off my hooks.

This would be a superlative choice for public or school library acquisition, maker's groups, fibrecrafts groups, activity groups, pension homes and similar. The projects range in difficulty but none are beyond the scope of a keen amateur. I was impressed how cute the hair scrunchies turned out and it's a really great pattern for using up tiny scraps of yarn which we all seem to collect.
