Michel Zink's book is a lucid and comprehensive introductorry manual of French literature in the Middle Ages. As much a well-reasoned argument about the early evolution of the French language as it is an account of that evolution, Professor Zink's book critically reviews and reforges everything that is currently known about medieval French literature and its development. Born during the Middle Ages, French literature was part of a continuous tradition. It remembered Classical literature, it confronted a vital medieval Latin literature, but it was also the expression of a highly original culture and its vehicle was an altogether new language. Medieval French reflected or modelled feelings, values and an imaginitive and aesthetic system which were very different from ours, but from which ours are descended.
