This short but well illustrated book surveys health care in Roman Britain from a largely archaeological perspective. Nicholas Summerton examines the remains of hospitals and instruments used for surgical proceedures, but also looks at less obviously related subjects, such as the cult of Asclepius and Roman attitudes to hygiene and bath houses, as well as methods of waste disposal. Overall he concludes that Roman medicine was not particularly effective and that some Roman innovations, such as improved communications actually helped the spread of disease!
