An excellent opportunity to get passionate about the Napoleonic epic that began precisely with this battle (even if Napoleon had already made himself known in Toulon and in the Italian campaign of 1796/7) and that will conclude just on the same days 15 years later. Those who know the battle will appreciate Crowdy's style and the passion he puts into telling it through new points of view.

This was a really enjoyable read. I love Napoleonic history, and enjoy most of what I read on the subject, albeit to varying degrees. This is right up there with the best. Highly recommended.

What can you say about this book? I think this time I can keep it short because it is a fantastic book around one of Napoleon’s most famous victories of his career. The French and Austrian espionage is also covered, which is overlooked in many other books. Clear maps with all the stages of the battle, general overview maps and beautiful images, register and index complete the book. I highly recommended this book!

T. E. Crowdy’s Marengo is not a novel but an excellent factual account. However he fills out the facts with detail and evocative descriptions which grip the reader as a good novel should... This is a book has both story and information it can be both studied and enjoyed. We highly recommend it to all levels of readership.

Terry Crowdy is a well-established military historian with particular interest in the Napoleonic period, though his many previous books also include works on other conflicts and the history of espionage. His fascination with Napoleon's army led him to be a keen reenactor for many years. He works for the Royal Palaces, based in Hampton Court. He lives in Rainham, Kent.
