If you want to visit a battlefield described in this guide, this book is of good use. There is a lot of information about each battle and for this reason I advise you to study the guide before going, so once you arrive you have the full benefit of all the information. In this way you ensure you get the entire experience. Since there are so many places to visit, you may discover there is not always sufficient time to visit all places described. By studying the guide prior to your visit/stay, you will be able to make the most of your trip.

Who Do You Think You Are? Magazine
With their usual attention to detail, ability to bring to life a seemingly bland vista and explain a complex battlefield story with top-notch pictures, maps and very readable prose, this "updated and expanded" edition of the 'Western Front North' is an essential purchase for those unfamiliar with the battlefields of Belgium and Picardy (the 'Western Front South' book covers the Somme).
The uninitiated should get this book if planning a journey, you will dig up all kinds of places you didnt know existed even if you are a seasoned traveller. The colour photography is excellent as is the information.
Barton-on-Humber at War
This is a good overall study of what is largely a neglected area of the Western Front and as such is recommended for anyone considering a trip to the ‘forgotten front’.
WWI Centenary
Whilst there are many comprehensive books out there, Major and Mrs Holt's offering sets the bar in terms of quality and depth of information. The production quality is superb, lavishly illustrated with high quality photos and maps. Tours are clearly set out, introduced by brief summaries of the action that occurred. ... The guide will ensure that the visitor is armed with all the information they need for a trip to the battlefields, and is definitely one I will be taking with me on my next trip.

Military Archive Research
The Northern Sector of the Western Front saw many battles which are famous in both British Military history and British folklore. They include Mons, Le Cateau-Ors, Ypres, Neuve-Chapelle, Vimy and Passchendaele to name but a few. The Holts have already produced guidebook on the Southern Sector of the Western Front and this guide is a companion and regards the Northern sector. Between the two they cover the main Western Front battlefields. This volume considers 15 of the most significant battles of the sector between Nieuwpoort to the north of the Somme.
This guide helps the reader to travel over the battlefields either on the ground or in the mind from an armchair. There are succinct military histories, cameo memories, the stories behind the Victoria Crosses (VCs), accounts of leading personalities, and references to the literature and poetry of the war.
The Holts have over 35 years’ experience of researching, providing guided tours and writing about the battles. Together they give both male and female perspectives of the conflict. These writers are renown for producing high quality literature and for pioneering the modern day battlefield tour. This volume is a new addition to their series and it too maintains their exceptionally high standard. If you are visiting the Northern section of the Western Front then you can find no better guidebook than this one.
Any reader who has already used a guide from these authors will already be familiar with the very clear and logical layout. To new readers, this is a trusted guide that is aided through by the use of full colour, producing very clear dated maps. It is a comprehensive guide that needs no supporting material from other sources.

About Tonie Holt
Major and Mrs Holt founded the first organisation to offer battlefield tours to the general public in the late 1970s. Since the 1990s they have been writing their series of guide books, incorporating all that they have learned from their experiences conducting thousands of people around battlefields. This series, designed to serve as companions for travellers, whether sitting at home or physically visiting the battlefields, includes detailed travel directions, military history, fascinating anecdotes and tourist information. The Holts share the writing of their books equally and conduct all their own research, spending many weeks on the ground as they prepare each new book or update previously published titles.
