This slightly unusual book takes the form of a series of 100 short biographies of Ancient Egyptians. Some are well known such as Akhenaten, Hatshepsut and Cleopatra, but most are much more obscure and thus allow the reader to build up a more complete picture of life in Egypt. Thus we learn of the military career of Ahmose son of Abana, a naval officer under 3 successive Pharaohs, and Paneb, a tomb robber, as well as Hesira the court dentist and Hemira a priestess. The lives are presented chronologically, which means that the book also gives a sense of the historical narrative of Ancient Egypt.
