Land Craft 1: The Jeep Paperback Add to Basket | £14.99 |
The Second World War Jeep was one of the most famous and influential military vehicles of all time, and over 600,000 were produced. It served with all the Allied forces during the war on every front and it has been the inspiration behind the design of light, versatile, rugged military and civilian vehicles ever since. In this, the first volume in Pen & Sword’s LandCraft series, Lance Cole traces the design, development and manufacturing history of the Jeep and describes its operational role within the Allied armies.
A selection of archive photographs showing the Jeep in service in European and Pacific campaigns gives a graphic impression of how adaptable the Jeep was and records the variety of equipment it could carry. The book is an excellent source for the modeller, providing details of available kits, together with specially commissioned colour profiles recording how the Jeeps used by different units and armies appeared.
Lance Cole's introduction to the Jeep is necessary reading and reference for enthusiasts and modellers.
If you are a modeller looking for guidance and inspiration then this book is a must have. Its pages are packed full of jeep goodness, giving tips and ideas for your build. It is also a great read, or coffee-time browser, if you are a vehicle enthusiast or simply love Willys / Ford jeeps and merely want to stimulate your brain and satisfy your eyes.

Self-confessed wartime jeep experts may find the book only scratches the surface, but what does that matter when you love jeeps? ... and anyway the book’s main focus is towards the scale modelling community. That said I am not a modeller but love the World War II jeep and thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Classic Military Vehicle, January 2020
This installment from LandCraft successfully combines the interests of the military vehicle enthusiasts with military modelers by providing an excellent overview of the jeep's history and development via good research and pictures, while including a good section, albeit a brief overview on available scale model jeeps in various scales, accompanied by a checklist of items to note when building a model jeep, and several excellent dioramas. Be warned: after reading through this publication, you may find yourself on the internet hunting down some jeep kits, just like I did.

Lance Cole's introduction to the Jeep is a valuable addition to the libraries of both Jeep enthusiasts and scale modelers.

Basically, this book contains the essential development and design history, describes the lovely details of wartime Jeeps, many variants and, of course, the services they provided on various WWII battlefields. Lance Cole delivers both excellent text and many photographs of actual Jeeps and model Jeeps. Modern military vehicle designers would do well by studying the small, very clever touches of the original Jeeps.

This is the first in the new LandCraft series and what a great start it is. The Jeep is a very versatile vehicle which, in turn, makes it a great subject for modellers. This book has some superb 1/35 scale showcases. Along with this is everything you need to know about the development of this ground-breaking vehicle.
Vintage Airfix
A must have reference book for modellers.

The Jeep is as iconic a military vehicle as the Chieftain tank, and this terrific book celebrates it in brilliant style. Intended for modellers, presumably, but the illustrations and drawings are inspiring.
Books Monthly
It does give an excellent insight into one of the best-loved vehicles of WW2.

Pen & Sword have embarked upon a new series, LandCraft, and the inaugural issue is penned by Lance Cole, entitled "The Jeep, Second World War". In its 64 pages one discovers the fascinating in depth evolution of the American 1/4 ton General Purpose (GP) [Jeep] from the early importation of foreign vehicles in the 1920's to the struggle of development and the political conflict between rival companies and manufacturers American Bantam, Willis and Ford. Production began at the end of 1941 and they didn't look back. They served in North Africa, Europe, the Pacific and in all branches of the many services of Allied nations. This little 4X4 champion was sturdy and simple, but getting to that design wasn't such a easy task. There are 14 variants discussed in the text and others mentioned. It's quite a good reference for the scale modeller as well as an informative read.

A good reference source that will appeal to historians and model makers who are looking for a general outline of this iconic vehicle.

Having become an immediate fan of the Tank Craft series, you can imagine my delight in learning of this new series that will feature other vehicles of war. Lance Cole does a stellar job in referencing the invaluable service that this vehicle brought to the allies during the war. Much like the Tank Craft series, it is a proper blend of reference material as well as highlighting some amazing scale models of some very talented builders.

The concise text provides a good overview of the development and use of the Jeep during WWII and makes this a very welcome book for both modellers and military enthusiasts. A book of this quality, covering a very popular military subject should

be expected to sell very well.

The book like others is illustrated with beautiful photos full of details, and the photos of the dioramas make you want to try to assemble one of the many kits on the market. The historical part of the book at the same time offers a whole series of information that makes that this book cannot miss on the shelves of fans of vehicles of the Second World War.

This is a great addition to the range of books usually covering tanks and comes along at an ideal time for me as I have two LRDG jeeps to build. The author has done a very good of covering a fairly complex subject in a small number of pages and tackles the model side of the Jeep as well. Both the written and photographic aspect has been well tackled and provides a good amount of information on the topic.

The book is well illustrated throughout, with archive photos as well as a lot showing restored Jeeps which are around in large numbers even now.
Military Model Scene, Robin Buckland
A good value book which is a good start to the new LandCraft series from Pen & Sword and author Lance Cole has made a very nice job of it I think.

A book worth having, primarily for the visual reference, and secondarily for the model-related sections.

About Lance Cole
Lance Cole has been a motoring and aviation writer and PR for over 30 years. He is also an internationally published photographer, illustrator and designer. The author of over 20 books, he has a parallel career as a news correspondent and TV camera-journalist. But it is old cars and their design and driving that fascinates him. He has driven Saabs all over the world and contributed to Saab design when he was a young design student. Lance wrote Erik Carlsson’s obituary for the Daily Telegraph.
Lance currently lives in England but yearns for a return to the outback of Australia where old cars rule.
