James Huffstodt was born in LaSalle, Illinois, about 100 miles south of Chicago. He subsequently studied American history at the undergraduate and graduate level at Southern Illinois University and the Univeristy of Illinois. Like his subject, General Hardin, he eventually moved to Florida, as his writing credits reflect, with more than 100 freelance articles on Illinoism Civil War, and Florida issues.
