While GUNS Australia readers are unlikely to need a book like this for their day to day work, it does contain a lot of good info on hardware and shooting techniques in the field like doping wind and range estimation. It is also a testament to the level of skill and training required to be a military or police sniper and is worth a read for that alone.

Unlike other books on sniping, the author, an ex-British Army sniper himself, does not go into excruciating detail on the weapons used. The various types are described, examples of them are shown and that is that. No obsession with proof marks or the thousand and one differences between models. This is not a book for the gun enthusiast.
Spicer examines firing training and the full planning process for inserting and withdrawal of a team. He provides numerous colour photos showing hides and firing positions, and examines in detail the camouflage and concealment used in various terrains.
Profusely illustrated with many examples of hides and concealment and with diagrams illustrating nearly every part of a snipers repertoire, this is a very useful book.

RUSI Defence Systems

Once again, Mr Spicer has managed to write an understandable and well illustrated book. I have been fortunate to receive a 'pre-released' book and am very happy with what I have seen. It is understandable and he has the gift to write as though he is talking to the reader. The subjects covered are illustrated and explained well and gives the reader an understanding of what is being spoken about. I would definitely recommend both of Mr. Spicers books.

Long Shot, Amazon

The art of the sniper is not all about taking long range shots; camouflage, concealment, gathering intelligence are all essential elements which are well covered by Mr Spicer.

Given the limitation which Mr Spicer sets himself (not to assist terrorists) and which he explains, I think he has done an excellent job of describing the role of the sniper in the modern world and the techniques necessary to be successful.

The illustrated manual of sniper skills I believe is an excellent book, one of my top printed resources on the subject. Although it is alittle holistic and lacks specific direction, it does this for good reason, as Mr Spicer states he does not wish to add to the education of a passing reader who has more sinister applications of this knowledge, therefore some of the more sniper specific expertise appears to be omitted. This book is highly reliable and from a very credible source, and covers many broad areas without confusing the reader and offers some good illustrations and photographs to educate and inspire. I am very pleased with this book, whilst I wouldn't call it a 'manual' by any means and this could mislead some, it is not a field manual, but it is very informative on the topic of sniping and to anyone interested in the subject, this is a very robust read and not compiled of hear-say war tales retold for hollywood drama which fill the shelves. Mark Spicer breaks down sniper training and employment in a realistic and satisfying read.
