No other publication on this subject comes even close to including the amount of detail provided in this book. An introduction both summarizes previous works on the subject and describes the difficulties of obtaining and verifying information from either the Germans or the Allies on U-boat losses.
The main part of the book lists by hull number each U-boat's date of commissioning, its commanding officer, and the date and port of departure for its last patrol. It also gives the date, position, and cause of loss of each submarine, with complete details on Allied units involved in the sinking, the names and ranks of their commanding officers and pilots, and the number of crew killed or rescued. An appendix neatly summarises data on the disposition of surviving U-boats at the end of the war and provides valuable statistical data on German U-boat losses.

History of War
...a greatly expanded revision of the author’s original 1998 work on the subject. Niestlé uses recently declassified documents and other newly found information, including examinations of actual wrecks, to correct the occasional errors in the original, some based on incorrect official information, and add details of many additional sinkings, so that the fate of only 63 U-boats remains unknown. Although his textual treatment is short, Niestlé manages to make a number of important points, perhaps most notably that more detailed research has revealed that mines were far more effective in sinking submarines than had been believed. Information on sinkings is in tabular form, supplemented by notes which are often quite informative. This is a work that is primarily for the serious student of naval operations, and particularly submarine warfare.
The NYMAS Review
No other publication on this subject comes even close to including the amount of detail provided in this book on individual German submarines lost in World War II. In this fully update edition of this unique work, the results of sixteen years’ further research, including the results of dives on U-boat wrecks, have been incorporated to fill in many gaps and correct mistaken wartime reports. The fates of sixty-five U-boats have either been finally determined or corrected from the previous edition.

Information given includes the hull number of each U-boat, its date of commissioning, commanding officer and the date and port of departure for its last patrol. It also gives the date, position, and cause of loss of each submarine, with complete details on Allied units involved in the sinking, the names and ranks of their commanding officers and pilots, and the number of crew killed or rescued.
Such a detailed compilation of up-to-date information on the whereabouts of every German U-boat contracted or impressed by the German Kriegsmarine between 1939-1945 will prove invaluable to scholars and enthusiasts alike.
In an age when online data bases provide immediate gratification for those seeking information on U-boats, Niestle's 'German U-boat Losses' will remain a definite source for years to come. The book is highly recommended for every serious scholar of the Atlantic war, and every library in naval history and the history of the Second World War.

There is no other book that details the German’s submarine losses in such detail as this volume. The level of detail is quite impressive and this edition is the result of 16 years of further research since the first edition. ... If you are seeking data on the fate of U-Boats then this book should be your “first place of call” – no other book has such detailed data.
