When the British Royal Navy, and the Japanese Navy, introduced the new Battlecruisers type, Germany had to follow suit. But, the author makes clear that the German ships were based on a different conceptual model to contemporary navies, with different design criteria.  the German designers understood that their navy would always be numerically inferior to the British. In turn their ships were designed not only for reconnaissance and compact with other Battlecruisers, but also to be able to join the battle line as ‘gap fillers.’.

To this end, this book suits both the expert on Naval history, but equally the novice researcher who is looking to find out more. A wonderful index at the back provides important reference.

A master reference book most highly recommended.

This new 335 page book is everything you would want form a modeller's point of view - it's packed with photographs and plans of all the German battlecruisers, including those that were not completed or only reached the project stage.
All in all, I can't recommend this book highly enough - it's right up there with the like of R.A. Burt and Norman Friedman and you'll have to go a long way to find a better publication.
