Long with its well-known counterpart, the Messerschmitt Bf 109, the Fw 190 became the backbone of the Luftwaffe’s fighting force. Capable of performing in theatres as diverse as North Africa, the Russian Front and in Western Europe, its superior killing ability earned it the nickname, the ‘Butcher Bird’. Famed for its speed and manoeuvrability – some of the Luftwaffe's most successful fighter aces – from Otto Kittel to Erich Rudorffer – claimed a great many of their kills while flying it.
This addition to the Luftwaffe at War series illustrates the different versions of the plane to see service, the theatres in which the plane served and the pilots who carved a name for themselves with the Butcher Bird.

This work is intended as a source of reliable information and inspiration for both modelers model airplanes as military historians and fans of military aviation. Observations: It seems to me a book of essential visual documentation when undertaking projects aviation scale based on real events or serious military conflict studies.
The book then contains over a hundred fantastic photographs, a few of which are even in colour, showing the aircraft in a huge range of situations, theatres and variants all of which are all captioned to explain what they show and any other pertinent information about the photographs. The images published included some lovely detail shots and some images of rarely seen captured aircraft and a few other unusually marked airframes.

On the whole I found the book to be a great source reference material and information, whether it be for general interest or looking at it like myself as a model maker. The publication is a great source of inspiration and information about the type for anyone interested in aircraft of this era and is a superb resource for anyone looking for photographic reference material on this extremely important aircraft.
Essentially, these are photo-essays, but they also include highly informative concise text and extended photo captions. The quality of the images is first rate and the selection of images matches. Some images are rare or never before published in publicly accessible documents. This book covers story of the FW-190 fighter that was also known as the 'Butcher Bird”. Highly recommended

Lots of detail in the photos, with aircraft both in flight and on the ground. Many include good detail which will be useful for modellers. Not just things like engines with the covers off and the small handling trolleys used to fit bombs under the fuselage bomb racks but details such as examples in Russia where the lower section of the undercarriage doors have been removed to prevent the build up of mud in the winter conditions they had to operate in. An excellent little change for a modeller to include. As well as the aircraft themselves, the pictures also hold lots of background details, and I found a couple of different styles of hangers that looked particularly unusual and which could make an excellent backdrop for a model if you wanted to have a go at re-creating them on a diorama. In one of these the aircraft in fornt carries some unusual leading edge markings as well, so more to attract a modeller.
Military Modelling
The 190 was an excellent aircraft which served throughout the war, and this is a good selection of pictures that show it for anyone with a special interest in the type.
This photo collection continues to provide a good source of reference for modellers and aircraft historians alike, and they offer I think very good value for money.
